Engine block heater
Has anybody tried a block heater, the type you plug into the mains?
I know we all have a fbh, which can be made to run when ever you want with little effort, that's great when you know when you want to go out but not so great if you don't.
As far as I can gather, in Canada and some European country's they have a block heater fitted, which is just like a emersion heater fitted in the coolant in the block and plugged into the mains, it's not very powerful, maybe a couple of hundred watt but it's left plugged in all night. I don't think the engine is kept hot, more warm.
So has anybody tried one? Is there even anywhere to fit one on a tdv6?

I cant remember the name but a company advertises in landrover owners that sell a 240v heater that fits into the coolant line and does the same as the pre heater but on electric i have known people in canada and sweeden who used to put a parafin heater under there sumps over night but not sure id want to do that, and doubt you can in a D3 due to sump guard. if i find the link ill post it

That's not a block heater but a coolant heater, it pumps the coolant around the system. A block heater is just a eliminate that sits in the coolant without it pumping the coolant around the system.

I've used one in a John Deere tractor that struggled to start in the cold! It worked brilliantly it started loads easier! D3 x2 now gone

this is a not a block heater but a coolant heater, which isn't acceptable to Zinke.
I would like to understand why a coolant heater is unacceptable, as already asked.

Given this is not a block heater but the function is the same.
These heaters are widely used in scandinavia and warms the engine even in very low tempeartures.
My engine is not hot but more than luke warm even at -25C.
The heater does not have a pump so it will not circulate through the radiator and thereby lose efficiency.
The heater is inserted in the heater hose just prior to the thermostat ( on the discovery) and warms the engine block only. I don't have it installed on my Disco but the daily driver a Merc A class is fitted with a timer, cabin heater and battery charger. The timer uses outside temperature to determine when to start the heater so that your car is warm when you want to go. You set the departure time on the timer.
I hace A Calix system. DEFA offers the same setup.2008 Java Black D3. 2.7TDV6 HSE.

Poking about on the DEFA site shows they only offer an external heater (rather than immersion-type element) for the TDV6 too.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I like the idea of replacing a core plug with a independent heater, low power requirement that can be left on for longer periods of time, rather than something pumping coolant around to warm things up on a shorter period of time (for which I will just use the fbh that is already fitted to the car).
With the type that's you fit directly into the block, there is nothing to go wrong, no pipes to cut or T into, it just fits and plugs into the mains as you want and need and could be left connected and powered for a long period of time if needed.
Further more, if that reason is not good enough for anybody, it's my truck and it's the type I'm interested in, I don't want a coolant heater with I pump, not what asked about and not what I want look at fitting

There must be a part number for the correct bit as its n the workshop manual, I'll keep looking through the parts catalog.
