D4 6-speed V 8-speed views please

Just mulling over changing to a D4.I have done a fair bit of looking around and comparing, but I would like the views of someone who has experience of owning/driving both the 6 and 8 speed auto box.
Just drove my mates new 3 ltr Q7 and was pretty impressed with the new 8-speed box.
Just want to find out if I would be better shelling out a "little" extra and get an 8-speed box instead of the 6 ?
Cheers

I have a 2011 D4 with the 6 speed box and am getting a 2012 D4 with the 8 speed box next month, although I haven't had that much chance to drive an 8 speed I have had a couple of test drives and that is what made my mind up to go for the 8 speed. I feel the new gearbox is so much smoother than the 6 speed, gear changes are hardly noticeable unless you are watching the rev counter and it just seems to suit the car better. Like I say I haven't had that much experience of it but I will be able to give you a better opinion after next month
 Cheers Ian

Have had my 8 speed for 3 weeks now and the difference from my 2011 Disco 6 speed is unbelievable! Very Happy

If you have the cash definitely go for the 8 speed, a) because it is so smooth and quiet, b) the fuel consumption is far better and last and most important the residuals will be much better as everyone will be after this model down the line!

Bit like the old TDV6 RR against the TDV8, it is the one to have! 8)

But it gets even more complex, the 4.4 TDV8 is the one to have over the 3.6 one. Whistle

Ah well, I don't know about that, never got to having the 4.4, just too expensive for what I want a 4x4 for!

I have a number of friends who have all changed to Discos from RR's and they wouldn't go back, even the ones who could easily afford to! I'm not one of them though RR prices are out of my league now! Rolling Eyes

The new model is a cracker!!

Hi
I drive a Disco 4 at work, They are a formidable tool, WARNING, they don't have an accelerator, they have a LAUNCH pedal, those Baby's whistle! If I'd got the spare cash, I'd get one tomorrow. D3 to D4, a no brainer, get your wallet out if you can afford it.
On the slightly negative for me, I like the analogue fuel and temp guages on the D3, they are digital and naff looking on the D4. Otherwise, I can't see how you could be disappointed.

Had my MY12 XS with the 8 speed just over a week and the difference between it and my MY10 6 Speed is noticeable. Gear changes are much smoother, in fact unless you are accelerating hard you don't even notice it. THe paddles are great to drop a couple of gears if overtaking and the torque low down seems to be improved. Rotary gear selection feels odd at first but quickly becomes second nature, as an aside the MPG already seems an improvement on my last D4 and is edging towards 30mpg, the old one rarely acheived 26mpg on the same roads. Very Happy

Had mine since the start of December and love it compared to the 6 speed D4 I had previous. Fuel is better and now I have 3.5K it appears to be getting better still. Rotary knob took a lot of getting used to but is also a BIG improvment once you get used to it. Car is smoother, quiter and quicker Whistle
Only thing I have noticed is when the ti tent is on the back it tends to move up and down the box a lot more, started using sport mode and that makes a diffrence.

I've got the 6 Speed and just drove an 8 speed off road at the Land Rover Experience nr Skipton

Without a doubt the 8 speed all day long but without the stupid dial and flappy paddles

On the road the dial doesn't make any difference stick it in D and off you go and the flappy paddles bring a sense of actually driving the car back.
But the problem i found is when you take it off road, you are constantly trying to find the dial when selecting the correct gearing (i.e pull and twist for sport/manual whereas stick shift is a simple flick over without even looking) meaning you are distracted from whats in front of you. I think this is because we are so used to using a gear lever to change or select gears so it has become more natural, maybe with more time driving with the dial i dare say i would have got used to it but it was distracting.
Also the bloody flappy paddles were getting in the way when trying to turn the wheel swiftly between your hands - a bit like the 10-2 type stuff you have to do on your test, or even changing down or up a gear when turning a corner when the steering wheel was upside down was a problem. For instance i was travelling up a steep gravel hill in 2nd and turned to aproach an even steeper humpback ramp thing so i tried to get 1st but ended up getting 3rd because the wheel was upside down.
I know its a bit picky as mosy D4's will never get off road anyway but i felt better and more in control with the stick shift.

So for me 8 speed but put the stick back in the car for god sake, next thing we know will be getting a PS3 control replacing the steeing wheel Mr. Green
