I think the D4 is a little better off-road than the D3 - particularly the RockCrawl and Sand TR settings, which have been improved. On one of our training days, we took a D3 and a D4 over the same ground one after the other, and the difference was noticeable, even with the D3 on more aggressive tyres. I video'd a part of the course:
