Only thing I miss is the fuel economy of my old D3. D4 is nowhere near as economical, I'm loosing about 5 - 6mpg doing the same journeys, same driving style, infact same everything, just can't think why its lower

I'll echo that. Loosing about 5MPG over my D3 (was manual).
Three main things I miss though from my D3 SE to D4 XS - Electric Memory seats (SWMBO is still bitching about why I changed if for less spec) and Arm rests and rear heared seat
She is not impressed - of course the engine means nothing to her. D4 HSE - Aintree Green
D4 Orkney my13 - gone
Stornaway D4. Gone, Didn't like it at all
D3 silver manual. Loved my first LR

I have not even got my D4 yet, and have realised that I am going to miss the key battery charging up in the ignition. Starter button seems like a toy without a real function. D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

It's function is to start the car if you have keyless entry where you keep your keys in your pocket.

Hi MarsKy, Sorry I mean, the key / ignition lock that charged the key fob whilst driving was more practical than a keyless / start button arrangement, where you have to replace a battery cell. Personally I don't think the starter button is a great improvement. Though I guess there are people who see it as a step forward; I'm not one of them. D4 SDV6 HSE 11MY - Gone

My BMW 520d Touring had the rechargeable fob and pushbutton start.
I was told to alternate the two key fobs each month to keep them charged (I was the only driver), as once the rechargeable battery is done, it's a replacement of the whole fob and a few hundred quid.
So I'd rather have to replace a battery than the whole fob.
But I know your point - if you have to insert the fob, a turn of it might as well start the car.

I made the mistake of looking at some one year old D4's yesterday, and started considering an upgrade. I am now wondering (for those of you that have upgraded from D3 to D4's) if there are any down sides / things you miss (apart from the bank balance) ?
Or are there any must have items you would look for on a D4 ?
Simon.
Simon, there are a total of 1100 changes from the D3 to D4.
I had the D3 2.7 and changed to the D4 3.0 two years ago. The very first thin I noticed when I hit the freeway, was how much quieter and smoother the D4 is.
The power and the brakes were the second thing.
The upgraded interior looks more like a rangie too.
After 85,000Klm's I still enjoy driving it.
Cheers, Craig
Hi all,
Thanks for your observations and thoughts.
To cut a long story short, I traded the D3 HSE in for a D4 HSE. Here are my Pro's and Con's.
Downsides:
Cup holders, too few in wrong places
Less driver storage
Terrain Response / Height / Hi-Lo transfer box controls now in wrong place
Prefer the functional design of the D3
Upsides:
Its been said before, the 3.0 engine is great. (The torque more than the power)
I find the seats more comfortable as I am tall
Phone integration
Better brakes
And of course its lower mileage and still has some LR warranty.
Now the long wait for the paperwork to go through before collection.
You buy a D4 HSE and your first downside regards the cupholders!

Odin,
Yep they are the biggest problem.
The engine is great, the brakes are great, and as Craig said earlier in the thread, it is much quieter and smoother at speed.
I know its not a big deal ... but it's hard to fault the bigger things (or indeed anything really).

Just traded a D3 HSE in for a D4 HSE and found adaptive front lighting was an optional extra on D4 HSE whereas it was standard on D3 HSE.

After a week driving my new LR4, I have to say I love everything about it, except the missing cupholders! What happened? Don't allow an inanimate object to outwit you.

I must admit, I like the cup holder position in the D4.........and the terrain response dial. Only had my D3 for 6 months prior to buying the D4, so didn't take much adjusting.
I find that the gear lever is no longer in the way of the cup holders.
Just my 2c worth.
Cheers, Craig
