checking oil level
I've tried reading off the oil level from the service display on my MY12, but I am getting a 'not currently available' message, despite sitting there for 5 mins or more. Am I doing something wrong?

5 mins is not long enough - needs to be at least 15 on mine - I usually leave a lot longer than that

Are you able to go off and do something else in the meantime, that seems ridiculous. I take it there's no dipstick?

on mine, I lock the car up, then come back about 15 minute later and the oil level is displayed, however come back over an hour later and get the message 'not available'

Only the dipstick that decided peeps can rely on LR's electrickery. Mind you my 520d had no dipstick but the oil is checked when the engine is running so no wait.

The handbook says:-
Prior to checking the oil level ensure that:
The vehicle is on level ground.
The engine oil has reached working temperature (oil is hot).
The engine has been switched off for 10 minutes, as the system will not give an accurate reading until the oil level has stabilised.Cheers Ian

Thanks Hairy Dan, I missed the 10 minute thing in the handbook, didn't realise that I could go off and do something else in the meantime.

I would be interested to know what readings people are getting, over the first 2000mls.I was told
by the dealer that it is normal for oil to be used over the first few thousand miles, and they said
that if it reads OK, then it is ok, I would feel more confident with a Dip Stick maybe i'm to Old, Hey Ho Always walk behind a Shooter and

so the idea of running him up to full temp and then leaving him for 10 mins before checking the oil level - would that apply to D3's coz my dipstick is the bain of my life ie its one of those nobbly ones which are a ugger to read when mine's cold
Mine started out as full but dropped two notches in the first 400 miles and hasn't moved since, well not so far. Now at 1100 odd miles. It just had an inspection service and the dealer did not top it up, saying they prefered to leave it at that height to avoid overfull warnings.

LR's electronic oil measuring instructions are prejudiced against what is probably their avarage owner, ie those of us who, when we finally do remember to check the oil and park on level ground with that intention, lock up the car and start the 10 minute wait; then instantly forget all about it until half a day later..
So far I have had my D4 2 years and completed the whole procedure about 3 times only.
I've been lucky the level never moves off 3/4 and I have a shelf full of 1 litre bottles of oil provided by the stealer at each service and never needed by the D4 or preceding RRS. 2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

So tonight I switched off the engine and turned on the ignition, set the system to measure oil level and left the car for 10 mins, when I came back the screen was blank. I'm no newbie to this as I've had a couple of cars with electric dipsticks but not struggled like this. Now worrying me because my cars covered 1500 miles and want to know the level. Is it me?
