I'm sure this is right, it waits until the auto box fluid is up to temp. Apparently it does this by holding each gear for longer and not selecting 6th.

No it's true ...the transmission will hold all gears longer and won't go into 6th until it is happy 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

In addition to what's already been said, it'll also stop the torque convertor from locking up to help warm up the ATF as quickly as possible.
Once you've driven a little bit, it'll start locking up the torque convertor, change up at lower revs and also allow 6th gear to be used (when in D). 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Quite normal. I understand that it holds a lower gear when cold in order to get the catalyst up to working temperature quicker. Also you will find that when cold and in fifth, if you take your foot off the gas the revs will drop to idle, but if you manually engage fifth and sixth, even when cold, it doesn't happen, even when you change back to automatic.
