Tales from the national parks tonight on BBC4 21.00hrs. The Peak District, on 4x4 driving and people wanting to ban it in the area. Watched the last one about Honister Slate mine in The Lakes, good viewing.

They couldn't have written a better plot for last week's episode... maverick local lad done good re-opens failing industry, turns it into a tourist attraction despite the planners, and then the twist! Hope this one's as good (though perhaps with fewer Big Cry moments)

In 2007 the Disco3 boys did a trip to the Lakes and visited Honister Mine. I think Mark Weir's mum showed us round. They were really friendly, allowing us too drive up right to the top of the mine...

Though the descent was a bit scary...

Sorry he died. Sad Hope the business carries on without him.

The fun police really are out in force. At least in Scotland when we have green road runs organised it is with the land owners full permission. Only trouble is you can't just go any time you like.

Well that was interesting... the 4x4 guys came across pretty well, the trail riders didn't exactly come up covered in glory (on the whole, the ones I've met are perfectly reasonable folks, but they do have a habit of looking like something out of "Mad Max" and combined with the noise and speed, it does make them pretty intimidating), while a lot of the vox pops looked like something from little britain. You had to feel sorry for the National Park guys stuck in the middle though

Ultimately it seemed to be about 'reasonable behaviour', from all sides. I've not laned seriously for quite a few years, but when I did, it was small groups, sure of our rights and way finding, careful to respect other users and the trail - and ready to turn back if a surface was bad or going to suffer damage. If a guy in a high vis jacket is waving at you, then it might be a good idea to slow down and see what's going on. If someone wants to ban motorised vehicles whatever, then say so - don't argue it on grounds of environmental damage (especially by trying to restrict access to the winter time only, which is when the trails get really messed up.) If you want to complain about the trails widening from overuse, then don't walk on the nice grass at the side of the trail yourself, and don't complain when the off roaders offer to maintain a trail that's overgrown (through lack of highway authority maintenance, no less) And don't get me started on the mess horses can make of a trail - clearly the shot of the horse struggling in the deep mud was meant to be sympathetic, but was it really so different to the shots of "bad" 4x4s getting stuck and being towed out? Shouldn't both groups have just turned round at that point?

Cheap reporting Censored Censored

And what ever happened to 'nominated width' - all permissible (and therefore definitive) rights of way have a nominated width which describes how much 'lane' is supposed to be available at any point along its length. With regard to the overgrown blackthorn, it is the duty of the local authority to ensure the correct prescribed width is available to ALL users.
