My dearly beloved D3 was at the St/Dealers for its 45k service........
The service report I have been given is that the "wheel nuts are swollen"
so...
1) is this a common complaint ?...is it model year related, wheel nut batch related or something that happns to some & not others......puzzling
2) is it dangerous ?....does it mean the wheels can loosen or just that the spanner doesnt fit
or...
3) the wheel securing stud threads will get damaged ?...far more serious
surely this is a component supply, materials specification issue that should be sorted out by LR...especially if it has any safety conotations...
4) or are the dealers taking the P$ss & seeing if I go buy more "nuts"....like some dumb pillock thay may think I am.BREXIT - done properly.

The nuts corrode under the alloy cover making the covers and therefore the nuts swell, this makes them hard to get a socket on and then hard to remove from the socket. I had the same problem with my defender, the solution is either new nuts or use a slightly larger socket.....any other options?D4 2014

TFC replaced my swollen nut 2 weeks ago as part of a routine service.... all the rest were fine
I can only think it would make getting the wrench onto them more difficult....can't see that they would swell to the extent of damaging the wheel/thread etc,but no doubt somebody more enlightened will be along in a minute.
I have never experienced this on any other car I have had"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

This is a well known issue on Disco's. I assume its a materials issue.
I can only recommend you replace any nuts that are becoming a problem. As they expand you will progressively muller them and either won't be able to get them off when you need to or can't fully tighten them. I had to replace 8, on one wheel 4 were shot, on the others 1 or 2.
I change wheels between road and off road, so the nuts see some action.
As for safety losing one nut should not result in you losing a wheel, and it is unlikely to suddenly fail afaik. I'd hope no one would re-use a nut that was at a point of failing or so damaged it couldn't be tightened properly. But as I had 4 on one wheel I got a bit nervous, and sods law I get a puncture on that wheel in the rain and don't have the tools to get them undone!
I bought some spares which I keep in the car and replace them as required. Not cheap at £2.50 each.Tony

Don't think the nuts swell, I reckon they twist.
Had to replace many of mine on my old D3 due to constant wheel tyre changes....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

I think you may find they twist because they're swollen.
A few of mine swelled to the point where I had to hammer the socket onto the nut, even then it was only on the end of it and the result was that the stainless cover twisted and made the fit even worse.
I ended up replacing the full set - and disposed of the crappy locking nuts at the same time Clive

No, they twist because the top of the nut is out of alignment with the base of the nut.
Well, mine do anyway.
Just checked as I've still got the old ones in the garage....... always on the road less travelled 🚧
I agree with ronp.
When the D3/RRs came out they where fitted with black wheel nuts, which not only corroded quickly (not an uncommon problem have a look at most mercs) but twisted, partly due to the shallow head design (forging issue) and partly to the material.
JLR then change back to the design used on the D2 and fitted a stainless cap on a new deeper nut**, unfortunately through a combination of use and corrosion the cap becomes slightly loose which start to twist when a socket - (particularly multi point sockets) is used.
The bottom line is it is a design fault. btw- the assembly line uses a multi headed gun which does all 5 nut up together, the socket on this grips on the flats not the corners.
** the change to a stainless cap has created all sort of issue with the locking nut as when the nuts where black it matched, however they could not put a cap on it as it defeats the object of the locker and it has remained in a zinc flake finish ever since.

Mine is a MY05 and no black nuts fitted but I have had one nut corrode underneath the 'cosmetic' metal capping making it larger than normal - replaced along with the useless lockers.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

After having the same problem with my D2 and seeing the same stupid style of covered nuts on my D3 I replaced all the D3 nuts with a solid chromed nut when I first got it. They are similar to these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/20-Lugs-13-...35b5946ce9

I have black nuts on my 2005 D3 except for two which are the chrome cap type.
They black ones look pretty horrid.
I might treat her to a new full set of nuts for Christmas.

of the dreaded things.....
......the 22mm socket I had didnt fit the old swollen ones - so had to revert to the black wheek brace thing that came withe car.
in fact the black wheel brace thing had to be tapped onto three really bad ones.
I bought LR ones (that will probably fail the same way) in about 5 years....I am unsure about buying 3rd party ones that may or could compromise safety.
........seems daft that LR used to sell a "wheel nut pencil sharpener".....to boast about just how big & robust the LR Diso wheel nut was...& then customers are than left to sort out what can only be a design / materials / manufacturing problem.
.........Dafter still I bought one of these

I've just discovered that one of the nuts on my 2010 D4 is swollen. Should I just call LR Assist to swap it for me?D4 HSE, Active Rear Diff, surround cameras, adaptive xenons, heated steering wheel, TPMS, remote park heating, centre console cooler box

Actually, not to worry, got it off with the dodgy LR spanner in the toolkit. My back didn't like that though.D4 HSE, Active Rear Diff, surround cameras, adaptive xenons, heated steering wheel, TPMS, remote park heating, centre console cooler box
