You could try Ian at http://www.hids4u.co.uk/

I have purchased a Xenon from them and it was only £25 a few months back Thumbs Up

Can't answer your question, but I believe the advice from those in the know is to always replace the Xenons in pairs anyway as they change colour over time, so you're unlikely to get an exact colour match if you just replace one, even if it is the exact same make and type as the other, older one...

hid bulbs

Hi
OE spec xenon bulbs are around 4500 kelvin aftermarket are from 5000k. I would only change in pairs as previously posted as there will be a colour difference.
Do not use antthing higher than a 6000k as your light output will be greatly reduced it might look good but thats about it.
I would also use the same manufacturer as they will differ in some way keep them both the same and buy from a reputable bulb supplier also stick to a good make as the cheaper ones are not worth the money.
cheers
Mike

They are D2S type and made by Philips! Hids4u do quite a few but I think Philips are the best Thumbs Up

bbyer, my D3 05MY owner's manual states that the D2S Xenon bulbs should be rated at 12V/55 Watts. I believe the 4300K Philips D2S 85122C1 bulbs are rated at 85 Volts and 35 Watts. Can you throw any light on this? (pardon the pun)

Hi Kerosene Junkie, Xenons usually run at about 23,000volts and 35 watts. 12volts 55watt sounds like a halogen bulb to me. A misprint perhaps? Wink

Thanks for the reply, Barry. I've just re-checked the owner's manual for my D3, and it definitely states for "Headlamps, low and high beam (Xenon)": 55 Watts (D2S). As far as the voltage is concerned, is it maybe the difference between low (12 V) input voltage and high (transformed) output voltage used to generate the arc?

.... just read this on the hids4u.co.uk site:

"In an HID Xenon lighting system, the voltage between the two electrodes rises firstly from 12V to 23000V and keeps stable at 85V by using the Xenon HID ballasts system."

... so I guess that's the reason for the confusion Smile

maybe some blue light

Yes, I saw the 55 watt reference in my handbook and assumed that it was either a misprint or what LR figured the bulb would be when printing of the first set of books.

55 watt D2S Xenon bulbs do seem to exist but they appear to be of Far East manufacture and probably do not meet any EU / DOT spec. Also it is not clear to me that one can just install 55 watt as the factory ballast may only be designed for 35 watt; if so, replacement of both ballasts would be expensive.

The link below is to some material on the 55 watt D2S Xenon bulbs. What I find interesting is the reference to the fact that more watts can yield less light due to colour shifts away from the 4300K to more blue frequencies.

The voltage question is I would say answered above; the thing to remember is that our Xenon bulbs are a mix of the current high pressure sodium street lighting bulbs and Arc lamps from the old search lights of WWII.

I actually figure that in this case, Land Rover got it right the first time, (for being able to see objects on the street and not bother oncoming traffic), and that is why most OEM are using the 4300K 35 watt bulbs.

Thank you, bbyer. I bought the Xenon you indicated and it wolrk perfectly in my D3. Can you imagine that they ask here in Brazil USD 500.00 (five thousand american dollars) for a bulb? I bought at EBay and paid USD30.00..... Wink

They do the same in Canada as well.

In Canada, they almost will not sell you a single bulb - you pretty much have to purchase a pair of them, at least if the dealer does the work. The reasoning is that new bulbs burn at a different colour than than older bulbs, hence to colour match both sides, both bulbs must be replaced. The cost is now double.

And yes, I can believe the price your supplier tries to get as these bulbs are new to pretty much everyone and are not readily available even at the wholesale / mechanics supply real auto parts places, let alone the consumer parts places.

It took me quite awhile to dig up the data on the bulbs and then to source them. I also note that Chinese knock off bulbs are starting to show up on eBay. I think it is best to keep with the Philips D2S 35 watt bulbs in the 4300K colour, Philips part number 85122C1, as something different may damage the ballast which is the expensive part. There is also the question of electrical noise, at least from the ballast, so the more OEM the headlights remain, I think the better.

Philips and Osram are OEM. The osram cool blue intense are what I use and these are 5000K - OEM street legal and produce a much whiter and what to the eyes seems brighter light.

Replace in pairs is good - as then you have best performance and matching colour as all bulbs go bluer with age

We also stock the ballasts for the D3/LR3 - with built in controller for the active xenons

Regards
Ian

Active xenons means both low and high beams?

Regards Ian
I assume the term "active xenons" means the assembly a xenon bulb is housed in has the mechanical flapper that flips up and down so that one has both both a low and high beam?

Also, what is the significance of the term "built in controller for the active xenons"? Does this mean that something inside the ballast provide the power to the flapper to flip when a high beam request is received? If so, then I suppose a non active ballast is one where the xenon bulb it operates sits in an assembly that is just focused for low beam and the ballast only has to provide the power to operate the bulb.

I gather that there is no such thing as a xenon bulb that is focused solely as a high beam light source due to the bulb warm up time - without the flapper, there could not really be a flash to pass function for instance? (There are xenon driving lights, both spot and wide, but those are not what I would consider "high beam".)
