Rubbing noise on full lock in reverse |
|
Bit of a strange one this ! I drove 15 miles down the M1 to Meadowhell shopping centre and as I was parking up, I reversed on full right lock and got a graunching noise and felt like the brake momentarily came on on one wheel. I did a bit of toing and froing to get parked but when I got chance on the way out, I tried a couple of full lock reversing manoeuvres and nothing unusual at all. I've have this once before in warm weather and couldn't recreate it then. MY11 D4 HSE with 3,600 miles futon new.
Any ideas chaps ? 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

Nasty noises under full lock could be as simple as needing copper-slip on the steering end stops.
These can make a hell of a noise when dry, similar to a burst of hill descent working.
If you look on the back of the wheels you'll see a rounded spike that obviously would match with an indent in the suspension wishbone. This is the steering stop, and needs a smear of copper grease, repeated on the other side. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

In fact any grease will do. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks for the input. It was on smooth level ground both times it's happened - in fact it could have been one of the other Meadowhell carparks last time ! No copper grease to hand but, as an adopted Yorkshire native, will duck fat or lard do 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

......The problem with that is when you can't find the dogs.....they'll be under your car licking the steering stops... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
