Newer, older, high milleage, low milleage, low high spec.... |
|
Hi,
I've been looking at Discovery 3's as the price is becoming more reasonable now...
Now... for the same kind of price I've seen
54 - 06 reg disco, leather, sat nav.. 100 - 120,000 miles
06 - 57 reg disco, basic model, 100 ish miles upwards
54 - 55 reg disco, low milleage basic spec
I would love leather and sat nav, but do higher miles mean more problems? Or are the new models less problematic so milleage not so bad, or is milleage king, or.....
Also... with the sat nav screen there, does that give any other options or functions?
And much difference between manual or automatic, are either better for various reasons?
I'd love to hear your general ramblings, what you would do, what's important when buying these etc.
Thanks,
Daniel

I would say it depends more on condition, how it has been looked after / serviced and how it drives (they can feel very different) check tyre wear as a general sign of how the suspension is doing (bushes seam to go at all different mileages).
Check the air suspension goes up and down ok with no nasty noises or bongs from the dash.
Get as decent a warranty as you can get, if only to get any teething problems sorted.
I would go auto with the D3 and the auto is def the favourite overall but if you prefer manual they are pretty good but can be a bit heavy on clutches.

Welcome Daniel
We all have our own opinions. I'll share two of mine.
Firstly I always go for manual over automatic - on the Disco 3 it appears to give an advantage of 2-3 mpg, but residual values might possibly be lower.
IMHO the LR SatNav is c**p - I find TomTom to be much more up to date with maps & more usable, particularly the ability to load POIs such as speedtraps, Shell fuel stations etc...
Others will give you guidance on mileage - FSH is essential, and the 105k service is expensive.
Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies. Well... I've shortlisted about 15 cars.... based on good price for the car... varying from the above options. I guess manuals must sell for less as every one I've shortlisted is a manual. I would quite like an automatic but the better fuel economy appeals to me, not that it's an option though... manual I guess it is!
Does the sat nav screen give any other options, rear camera, tv, other functions or is it just sat nav?
The 105,000 is pricey because of the cambelt needing to be changed isn't it? Servicing will mostly be done by myself so I'm not too worried on that aspect. The beauty of land rovers is there are always forums willing to give advice when needed!
Am I right in thinking it's best to go for a 7 seater as the 5 seater doesn't have air suspension?

Welcome
mileage wise I wouldnt worry about high mileage as long a its been serviced properly. the maintenance costs will kick in around the suspension bushes etc rather than the engine. the 105K service is a big one as the belts etc need changing.
personally I would either go for one under 50K miles or over 100K - under 50k and youve still got plenty of miles left before the bigger maintenance bills kick in and over 100k then those maintenance jobs will probably already have been done.
All my costly maintenance bills came when the car reached 90k-110k miles. there all done now and the car is running as new
re gear box - for me it has to be the autobox - its smooth and can be driven as a manual in command shift.
yes, it may do a few mpg less than the auto but its a more relaxing ride.
it all a personal thing so drive both and make your own mind up.
On a manual the clutches can go (just like any manual) and on a auto its woth double flushing the transmission fluid every 80k miles.
all but the basic model had air suspension. coil suspension is not worth looking at IMO Duncan

Which models had the coil springs, is that the 5 seater?
So the bushes go? ... bet they're not fun to change on these!
I'd like an automatic but being tight, it's 99% going to be manual as they're the only ones which have been shortlisted without even realising!

re bushes,
cheaper to buy the entire wishbone which come with all the bushes and joints - cheaper than the labour to remove and press new bushes etc Duncan

my two pennies worth...
re:auto/manual
Got to be in my opinion an auto, Ive had 2 manual 4x4's and this is my second auto (all landy's btw)
Went on a couple of off road courses in the last year, and both instructors reccomended the auto because of the clutch issue, eg you may need to slip it at some point..
and only last night after a trip across a farmers corn field (harvested), I had to sit in a gully/ditch thing coming out onto the road, at which this point the auto box came into its own, just holding the vehicle there ready, but with the clutch I would have to be slipping it, albeit for a few seconds
Mpg? Im gettin 26mpg extra urban, to 37mpg motorway.
save a few more pennies and go for an auto I'd say, but each to their own...
