My 2006 LR3 V6 was acting funny - engine light and battery light kept coming on intermittently but teh truck was running fine. The next morning I tried to start it and all it did was click once and all the dashboard lights came on. Several "knowledgable" people told me it was simply the battery. The truck is 5-6 years old and I do not think it was ever changed so figured that was probably correct. Changed out the battery - Same result.
Any ideas of what Im in for on this?

Sounds like an alternator issue to me. If the brushes have a dodgy connection (or a 'dry joint'), the ignition light fails to illuminate.
Obviously, without a charge the battery will quickly die (there's a huge electrical load on a D3 when it's up and running).
Get it running, then check the system voltage ...Regards,

Charge the battery up and then start the car and check the voltage. Use the screen if you have NAVI or buy a voltmeter for the 12V output (cigarette lighter) or with a voltmeter.
My alternator was changed on Friday - but my symptoms were different - possibly because I caught it early.
Mine sounded wrong - there was a whining noise, particularly at low revs.
Checked the voltage via the NAV diagnostics screen (As it gives an indication going along too - and my multi-meter was nicked out the car the other week )
Running at reasonable revs, it would just about get to 14.5, but at idle 13 was nearer the mark - put the front and rear heated screens on and it dropped to 11-12V - increasing revs did help, but obviously not right.
Now its 14.5V when charging and drops to 14V when charged. Idle is still 14-14.5V Mark.

Apologies for butting in but how do you check the voltage with the Nav screen?
ThanksIf you always do what you've always done, You'll always get what you've always got

Had the same symptoms as well - whining noise on low revs and low voltage on ibs battery monitor...(no warning lights whatsoever)
checked the voltage of starter battery -> 12,8V with running engine, 12,2V with cut off engine
so I'll get my new alternator on monday
Could that have really been caused by wading/mud???(not that deep....)

It certainly could, I had the same thing happen to my Defender a while ago, entirely due to mud.
It gets into the innards where the brushes are and makes them stick in their slides so they fail to make a proper contact, relatively easy to fix though.Clive

somehow I figured that would be the answer
But how to prevent that?
on the planned trip trough estonia i cannot always get the alternator out and
clean the brushes
maybe a good engine wash (don't know how to say that) would help??some
