now that could get interesting with powered steering and brakes and no engine running to support them and in those few seconds you need to take avoiding action of some sort Shocked Shocked

another stupid question: so D4 has no steering lock or is that electronic as well???
 Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

Yep... it's electronic. Should unlock whenever a smart-key is inside the car.

and it obviously stays unlocked when the key is no longer in the vehicle whilst the engine is running.

But sometimes tells you the steering is locked as you are driving down the road Shocked

My previous one did it all the time, even after the software updates.

It never did lock, but always called my bluff... I would pull over and restart to make the message go away

Yes, quite unnerving that one time it might just be correct.

A 2008 FFRR with an alternator dead short that stopped all electrics and the engine had its steering lock activated during the dying process, with the key untouched and still in the ignition.

Steering locks are archaic and should be banned.
