2012 Logic 7 - Is it worth it |
|
Back in 2006 we had a new Discovery 3 HSE which had a superb Logic 7 stereo. We are about to order a new D4 HSE and have noticed that if we want the logic 7 then its now around £1200 as an optional extra.
The question is, is it worth upgrading to this or is the standard unit in the 2012 HSE as good as the unit we had in 2006?

I didn't spec it on mine. 2012 MY ordinary high line has 400W and Logic 7 has 800W with only 2 or 3 more speakers. And the standard Hi-line is supposedly better on 2012 MY. I reckoned it would be hard pushed to be £1200 better.
Might depend on what type of music you play in-car and if your a Hi-Fi afficianado.
I think you might get better value for £1200 from a third party after-fit system, if you found the standard Hi-Line not good enough.
Trouble is there's no way of actually hearing both systems yet. If it don't fit the third time - try a bigger hammer

Thanks for the reply and yes it is difficult when you haven't heard the quality.
Does anyone know the output of the 'old' logic 7 from around 2006.

I used to have an 05MY D3 HSE with Premium Harman/Kardon Logic 7 which I believe had 13 speakers? Now I've only got the Hi-ICE Harman/Kardon 9 speaker system in the D4. To be honest, I can't tell the difference... but then I'm no expert. I also carry quite a bit of kit in the back, which sort of makes the rear speakers less useful than they should be.
In short, the Premium Logic 7 was good, but the standard Hi-ICE sounds just as good to me? I certainly wouldn't spend £1200 on a Premium 17 speaker system unless I intended to live in the car... I'd spend the money on something else!

Thanks again for the reply and advice. Will probably give it a miss and spend the money elsewhere. I'm sure that the D4 will have other bits that will make up for it.

Looking at that OLD Logic 7 wattage makes me think that the 2012MY ordinary set up with 400 W may be pretty close to the old Logic 7 but without the Dolby Logic 7 bit If it don't fit the third time - try a bigger hammer

Having just swapped a 2006 HSE for a 2011 one I can say the "standard" logic 7 sounds better than before; in particular the bass sounds better and the iPod lead provides great sound quality. I do find the screen control a bit clunky though, not being able to randomise within a playlist irritating for instance

Just dug out my old brochure and the spec on my MY11 HSE is HK Logic7 14 speakers (inc sub) at 480 watts which sounds fine but the reality is that I spend 99% of my time listening to DAB radio. I keep an old iPod nano in the car but to keep the capacity reasonable I use a fairly low bitrate so that's probably sub-CD quality too. In my case, a nice stereo is good enough and I doubt I'd get the benefit from anything bigger. Now if I was 21 and bass meant birds ...... 2010 MX-5 2.0 Sport Tech PRHT

really useful real-world advice. I'll not choose the Logic 7 upgrade for D4 2012MY when I put my order together to save the £1200 odd as i too listen largely to radio.
Still a bit of confusiuon in the specs for the audio in that which systems have the sub-woofer as passive?. Presumably for £1200 quid you get an active unit.
For the 2011MY it is not clear between the brochure and the 2011MY LR website configurator as the specs for the sub-woofer conradict.
