HELP engine system failure

got these codes to work off any clue before i spend loads of cash Exclamation P2290 injector control to low ! and P120F fuel presure regulator ! any clue as to where i should look first car runs fine then all the usual bells and chimes on display it says engine system failure re start car and all ok again "for a bit" Could run for 60 miles no problem then play up pulling out of a junction or best 1 70 mph in outside lane " Censored my self" i have changed the fuel filter thinking it was this but no Big Cry is the pick up pipe in the tank easy to check as been told this could be blocked and holding back the fuel ? or is the presure regulator easy find "been told it could be this " and is it part of the HPFP "loads of money" me thinks so dont want it to be that or poss a injector on its way out car not on high miles only 60k. treated reg on injector cleaner to many thanks STEVE

P2290 is low fuel pressure. You have already changed the filter, so that can be ruled out.

There is a little bleed valve at the back of the engine, to check fuel pressure. IIRC, it should be around 0.6-0.7bar at idle at that point, and im sure it drops to around 0.5bar when driving. If this is OK, it indicates that the LP Fuel pump and pick up etc is fine

Ideally, you need it plugged in and check the live readings for the HP side of the system when it does fault.

How about the split intercooler pipe problem people have mentioned in the past? Do a forum search maybe...

Hi,
I had the same problem.
Turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump. Big Cry extended warranty kicked in Thumbs Up

When I got that error and symptoms it was my intercooler that was shot. It had a few punctures and was losing pressure. But I had noticed a drop in overall power before it went completely.

ESF with these codes p2290 and p120f ?

would the inter cooler bring up just these codes ? as they are for the injector psi and fuel presure regulator! also maybe just my paranoid mind but think the pump in the tank is a bit noisey than before SWMBO says been like it ages!. so what is the best way to check the fuel presure from the tank pump ? just to eliminate that "can i just use a tyre gauge on the outlet at rear of engine bay? if it is the tank pump any clue how much the pump is and how hard to do the job me thinks looking at it tank as to come off is that true. did pump on my td5 through boot floor but dont think theres a trap door in the floor on a d3 Big Cry steve

Hi Steve,
You are right. The fuel tank has to be removed.

Best Wishes,
Peter

If it was an interclloer, it would come up with a turbo pressure fault

P2290, is low fuel pressure at the injector rail (after the HPFP)

A few things can cause this fault.

IT has already had a fuel filter (which is the most common fault) so that can be ruled out

You can check the fuel pressure using the valve at the back of the engine bay. Whether a tyre pressure gauge would work, I dont know... You should be getting about 0.6-0.8 bar of pressure. Any less, then suspect a faulty in-tank pump, or blocked pick-up pipe etc. Tank has to be dropped to access it

The High side fuel pressure needs to be read via diagnostics, due to the pressures involved
While it is on a diagnostic machine, check the fuel pressure regulator is working properly, as if not, it will lower the fuel pressure @ the injectors, which would bring up your fault
And also the rail pressure sensor, as this tells the ECU the fuel pressure at the rail. Again, if this is faulty, it will tell the ECU that fuel pressure is lower than it actually is, bringing up said fault

While uncommon, it would also be worthwhile checking the wiring between the sensors on the engine, and the ECU itself, just to rule any broken wires etc Thumbs Up
