Purchaser's Checklist

Righty ho: I would like to buy a D3. I'll be looking at perhaps an early model, so 05/06-ish with at least average mileage. Trim level could be variable. It would be nice to have an HSE, but perhaps there's also something to be said for a base model with 5 seats and curly suspension in the reliability stakes. I remain to be convinced on either viewpoint as yet. (Is the springed version still good off road?)

What I want to do is compile a checklist of things to...well...check when I go to look at cars. Not your usual things such as general condition, bodywork and so on, but things specific to D3's. This, of course could be useful to anyone in a similar position.

Any members care to part with their knowledge and experiences and compile such a list?

Obviously a complete service history is vital.

Then ensure it's had all it's call backs and software updates.

Ask about turbo, air compressor, and EPB replacements and repairs.

For high milers, 105k + the belts should have been done, or 6 years plus.

Check for any play in the front suspension as that can get expensive too.

Auto gearbox may need a flush too.

Hope that helps.

Check that all service actions and safety recals have been done along with service history, your local Dealer can gain all this information for you quite quickly, software updates they will probably not know about.

Check both the front carpets and check for damp which could indicate potential ingression issues caused by various problems.

Check that there are no warning lights staying on inside the car, ie engine warning lights. Check that suspension goes up and down easily and doesnt appear to be laboured. Operate the handbrake and make sure it holds the car and there are no loud screaching noises like someones trying to strangle your cat.

Drive the vehicle...for autos make sure there are no juddering through the car when changing under light load...for manuals make sure there is no slippage, make sure that reversing lights, pdc, and gear position indicator is showing correctly...if not this could indiacte a clutch fault.

At low speeds find some potholes and listen for any obvious knocking noises from the front or rear which could indiacte various suspension faults....dap your foot on the footbrake quickly and listen for any hollow clonks again indicating lower suspension arm problems. Listen for any bearing type noises from front and rear which could indicate , diff , tbox, or wheel bearing issues.

You may experience various running faults that may not show up as a engine warning light on... when egr valves are stuck open the engine is as flat as a witches tit...turbos again can be problematic but again you will know as it wouldnt pull your granny off the pizz pot. Check for black smoke under hard acceleration which could indicate turbo hose problems.

Cant think of anything else...if i do i will add later.

Hope this helps.

Check tyres for even wear.

Check tailgate opens correctly & struts are OK.

Check FBH (Fuel Burning Heater) is operative - may be difficult in summer time!

Check all electrics working & check lights for condensation or water ingress.

Check spare wheel, winch etc & also space saver or not.

If wheels & or tyres are not OEM check load ratings.

Or, if you're like me and know practically nothing mechanical, book an AA inspection report before buying.
