We have had discos and labs for rather more years than I care to remember. Firstly, a young dog - under one year should never be allowed to jump, either into a landrover or anything else of that height. Their bones are still very soft, and immense damage can be caused which will come back to haunt you in later years.
The answer is a ramp. The one we have used for many years is PetStep. It is really strong, folds and has a rubberised surface.
The first few times a dog uses it we guide them up with the lead, but after that they use it without any problem.
A friend who had 2 retrievers one of which was ghetting elderly was adamant their dogs wouldn't use a ramp. I lent them ours and there was no problem. They bought a used one listed on (I believe) preloved.

Our lab will be 20 months old by the time we take delivery in September so age-wise there should be no issue. I think we'll see how he gets on in the first few days but it sounds as though he should be capable of making the jump.
We're planning to reconfigure our driveway to make more turning space for the Disco so that will involve a bit of levelling, which should help him At the weekend he was jumping slightly up slope into the demo Disco we had.

Clearly, once every now and again won't be an issue, but I wouldn't want a lab under the age of 2 jumping in and out of the Disco on a regular basis. Not great for their joints

Years ago we had a black lab that loved going in the car so every time you opened the boot she was in, fraid of you going out without her. Problem was that one day i was checking the oil and she jumped into bonnet-miss that dog !! ex DI D2 and D3 owner now have FFRR TDV8 but thinking of coming back to a D4 Love my Disco
