With all due respect, Andrew S bought a car with the most basic requirement, an engine ,and it failed. He was very lucky it was under warranty, and that he has had a new one fitted, (and rightly so.) What worries the SH*T out of most of us, is the potential cost of having to have a new engine if the car were for instance, just out of warranty.

I think the thing you need to consider here is how many engine failiures are you aware of. I'm sure DiscoStu will confirm that there is some major excitement when an engine is returned for factory inspection...because it is so rare. And if there is the 'occasional' return then they may well find that what caused the engine failiure could be due to human interaction...perhaps 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

In addition, it was only an engine swap as the factory wanted the whole engine back, otherwise, it would have been head gasket replacement - a much cheaper option (and a failure that can happen to any vehicle)
Every manufacturer has to have a warranty cut-off point, there will always be out of warranty failures, LR are no different in this respect. Cost of repairs are going to be higher on a vehicle with a high initial outlay, it's always been the case and will continue to be so. Just another consideration in the total cost of ownership calculations really...

WAIT till I understand this.
Andrews got a new engine in his D3.
Didn't he have a re map on the ECU done by JE Engineering
and LR didn't quibble that this could have in any way have caused what ever failed.
What about JE Engineering what are they saying.
I mean I have the re-map by JE Engineering and I sure don't want to think it will knacker my engine.

I think you've already got the appropriate antibodies Rich so you'll be okay. Personally I'd be taking a risk but you should have been issued them at birth The End

To get the facts correct, JE have up-graded my engine, however the up-grade was removed at the 45,000 mile service and was not put back on until after the 60,000 mile service. So the engine has not been tuned all its life.
This is what we think has happened and this is only speculation.
The problem I had with the engine was down to a failure of an "O" ring in one of the head gaskets, the cause of this may have been due to header tank bleed screw failure. I would get the low coolant warning on the dash display all the time, each time I checked the coolant level would be ok. So eventually I just ignored the warning message just like the "cry wolf" saying.
The head gasket could have been replaced and I was happy for this to go ahead. I was then asked if I would like a new engine as Land Rover wanted to get my engine back for inspection. I said go for it.
To me this would suggest that Land Rover are taking note of issues and are looking to resolve/improve things. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Well my understanding of Andrew s' engine problem was head gasket/ 'o' ring failure which in turn damaged both cyl heads, requiring rework etc, costing rather a lot, plus I would say a risk involved as to whether the repairs would stand up to the job, (lets face it all diesels have a pretty high compression ratio, and I for one wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of something that 'lets go'). I do not know how many failures there have been in total, but I know my nearest dealer has had 3 so i'm told, at last count . I may be totally wrong here but I would guesstimate the cost of a TDV6 lump to be in the region of 10k ish plus a lot of labour, maybe more, its certainly not a cost I want to experience at any rate ,whilst owning a D3 is nice, its not THAT nice , if you see what I mean.
