Suitable trolley jack

Hi Guys,

Wanting get under mine this weekend but last night realsied my trolley jack has a 2 ton capacity ?? Would this be OK to raise the car if I only did one 'end' at a time. Question

Once it's up, will go on axle-stands (3 ton units from Halfords)

Lift height will be your problem, needs 53cm if my memory works properly. This works brilliantly! Mr. Green

The scissor jack that comes with the vehicle has a 1900 kg working load limit and a maximum lift height of 480 mm.

your two ton jack will be fine, especially as you will only need to lift one corner at a time.

don't worry about lift height, just jack up and prop up in 2 or 3 stages going a little higher each time. I have a few blocks of wood that I drop under my little bottle jack for this very reason. Safety wise this is safer than lifting the full height in one go as you will be subjecting your jack to a lot less lateral loads

Get a proper 3-tonne jack with the lift required for a D3. Messing about with bottle-jacks and bits of wood is just that - messing about.

The D3 is a serious bit of kit with suspension that seemingly has a mind of its own; it's not exactly cheap to run either so why skimp on something that costs less than 1 tank of diesel?

Agree with Robbie - I have one of those Clarke 3 tonne jacks and they are superb. Used a bottle jack (with axle stands) prior to that, but it never felt as safe and secure.

Mine was second hand, but I'd still pay £95 for a new one Thumbs Up

I have a clarke 2T jack and to be honest it sometimes struggled to lift my 306, which weighed about 1300KGs.

So I bought the 3T item in the picture above Thumbs Up

A 2 ton jack will be more than enough.

As others have said it's the lift.

On hindsight, Robbie is right, If you're a bit unsure of your capability to operate fairly standard equipment then go and buy a nice high lift trolley jack.

Here's a list of Do's and Don't to bear in mind when you're lifting your serious bit of kit that you don't quite know how the suspension works on it....
- Do come on here and declare you are about to go on a big job (and yes I do know what I big job is, I used to be a lumberjack in the Sahara Forest)
- Don't forget you'll need a measuring tape clipped on one side of your trouser belt to balance out the mobile phone clipped on the left side of your belt.
- Do keep the missus well informed of your progress, and make sure she brings you cups of tea as and when needed.
- Don't forget to wear a high-vis jacket (local logistics company logo on the back is optional) so everyone knows you're "workin' hard doin' man stuff"
- Don't forget to phone people regularly during your big job. It sounds good when you can say phrases like "just torqued 'er up" or "I had to go for the BIG hammer" within earshot of the kids who will undoubtedly be impressed
- Do think about your skin, barrier cream and latex gloves are a must. If no family members have been in hospital recently and allowed you the opportunity to fill you pockets while visiting with the "free" ones they have there (Large size, of course) then grab the missus' marigolds. She can do the dishes bareback for a while

Hope all this helps! Thumbs Up

Sure does, except Cost-co appear to have stopped selling them and the replacement model, the XL35Rdoesn't appear to have arrived over here yet either Big Cry

Useful thread, thank you guys. One question, though; what do you reckon to the Quick Lift version of the Clarke jack (CTJ3000QL)? Slightly less lift, but I like the idea of a slightly smaller jack to fit in the 3rd row footwell. I'd prefer to get a Clarke one since I want the locating spigot, having recently cracked my compressor cover in a off-road jacking incident Whistle

Julian

I bought a brand new Wolf 3t quick lift jack from eblag for £50 delivered and it is spot on.

Im loving that Thumbs Up but you forgot about clipping an insanely large bunch of keys to your camo trousers and the mandatory issue Rigger boots, copper wrist band is of course optional for this task.

Julian,

DONT buy the QL jack, I did and regretted it

The frame twists so easily and machine mart wouldn't entertain a claim for it, I ended up buying the proper 3 tonne one.

If you look in my gallery, there is a picture of the two side by side

Ask yourself, if the big one is rated for 3T why should the small one be as well ??

. . . because the manufacturer in the Orient will print on the box or item anything at all his costomer wants including "CE" and other conformity marks.

Thanks, Rik, that's exactly the feedback I needed.. albeit didn't quite expect. Do you know if the proper one will fit in the footwell, by any chance?
