My benchmark for good offroading was my previous series 2. That had air suspension on the rear and the extra ground clearance was useful. Apart from that and the HDC, I used to drive it off road "manually" and it was great. (it had the lockable centre diff). If the coil sprung D3 could match my old D2 off road I'd be more than happy.
Oh it will. That's not an issue. 17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

I am the proud owner of a manual Jan 05 model. It is and has been brilliant.
It's predecessor like for you was an Isuzu - a Trooper . I bought it having enjoyed the joys of FFRR ownership ( supreme off road , gutsy V8 , a real luxury but go anywhere car ) and the downsides ( a major breakdown every year , plus shoddy build quality ) and with young kids the need never to break down meant Japanese.
So it never broke down but on my off roading - on reasonable dual purpose tyres - I had to dig it out and get pulled out by a tractor.
Like John Cleese I gave the car ie LR one last chance and I am very glad that I did. D3 is the all purpose vehicle - I go off road , tow my 25' yacht , family holidays , gym runs etc etc .
Good luck with whatever D3 you buy !

Thanks everyone for your inspiring and really useful comments . I popped into the isuzu dealer where I bought the Rodeo today, to get an idea of the car's value (and see if he would be interested in buying it for cash.). I trust them; they gave me a great PX on the old Disco, excellent service and good after sales. Anyway, turns out they buy and sell a lot of D3s . He's looking out for one for me. Apparently he has a contact that feeds them in to him. Twyford is between Reading and Maidenhead; real Gymkhana country. I guess that's why he has high demand for them and was able to give me a good PX on the D2 - he retailed it off his forecourt.
(It's Bulldog of Twyford by the way)
I'll let you know what I get.
All the best

i was in a similar situation to you about 6 months ago. eventually convinced my self to a little treat and went for a hse tdv6. i have had a couple of issues, like the alternator went, but all in all am really happy, drives like a car, tows like a train and is a lovley place to be. the only issue is fuel consumption, but if your used to a v8 and 4x4's then this probably wont be too much of a concern.

The V8 was my Series 1 Disco, quite a while ago (well before the days of £1.30 per litre!). Have been on TD's ever since, but I guess the forum username just stuck. Maybe it should now be "luv_the_idea_of_a_v8_but_can't_afford_one" .
Anyway, I've made a decision to go for an '06 base model (see post in "My Discovery 3" section). A far cry from your HSE, cgtonka, but I'm quite happy to have the space, ride quality and comfort and versatility that any of the D3s will provide.
Looking forward to pimping it with some nice goodies! (and being able to show up at some of the LR shows without embarrassment, as was the case with the Isuzu, fine truck though it was.

fair enough, i suppose its what is available at the time. when i was looking hse's were only 2-3k more than a base model. i know this sounds like quite a lot, however a black S sold for the same price as a similare age/milage hse, so it really depends on what goodies you want. all the best.

Thanks folks. Just been looking at Gazzilio's thread in the "My Discovery 3" section (the one with about 10 pages of replies). His is also a black 5-seat coiler. Nice to see what can be done look-wise.
