Just been told at my service that the front disks and pads are low and will need replacing in the next few months. What are my options over the standard LR replacements ? seem to remember a v8 upgrade being mentioned previously ? ? Would I need new callipers to do that and are the costs comparable. Been quoted 300 by the dealer !

Callipers are the same, you'd need calliper carriers from a v8. Contact TLO (The Large One) on here for prices.

I have changed the padsa and disks on teh front and back of my D3 and it is very very easy!
However, I would suggest that if the pads are very low (and I would check this rather than taking what you have been told as gospel) change the pads before the warning light comes on your dash. Once the light has come on you will also need to change the sensors.
Changing the sensors is a pain in the !
It is not technically difficult as it is just a wire that clips into the pads and a connector at the other end, however the connector at the other end on the front is up behind the wheel arch trim and at the rear is behind all the suspension. If you do not have hands the size of a 4 year old girl's you will 1) find it awkward and 2) probably scrape and shred your hands to ribbons!
(This is probably when someone posts an easy way of doing it that I was not aware of!!! )

well I guess 3rd time unlucky. I'd changed two sets of pads on my old D3 without having to replace the sensor, but this morning changing the ones on my latest D3, well I eased the sensor out, it left the copper connector behind.
What a F*****g pain to get to the connector up behind the wheelarch protector. I ended up taking the wheelarch and mudflaps off to get enough clearance for the protector to move down, then couldnt get the old connector to unclip from the metal bracket holding it up - ARRRG

Th wheel arch liner can jus be bent in half once you've taken out a few of the clips. It's very resilient and goes back to shape no problem. Bodsys Brake Bible
