Misfueling

I bought my Discovery 3 in October and love it. Today I was horrified when my wife called me to say the car had broken down. After much discussion it was concluded that my wife had put unleaded petrol in the tank and then driven about 30 miles until the car conked out.
Land Rover assistance attended and said it doesn't look good at all and will take the car on a lorry to the dealer tomorrow for repairs.

I am a bit worried the Land Rover Dealer will see this as an opportunity to boost their end of year earnings figures. Does anyone know what is a fair or expected charge to repair this this kind of thing?

Secondly - Do you think these are valid grounds for divorce?

Welcome Billy, don't know re costs but it's expensive! Check you insurer, some consider misfuelling accidental damage.

And some specifically exclude it Sad

Hope yours doesn't. Land Rover will certainly want to renew lots of bits to retain warranty on the engine and related systems. If its out of warranty, you might want to try an independant who will do what is necessary?

Friend of mine put petrol in his BMW - but he didn't drive it very far - bill was about £500 - but could have been a new engine.

Problem is the petrol will strip all lubricant out of the fuel system and pump - so potentially very expensive Big Cry

How much fuel was left in the tank? And did she fill it up?

Thanks for the posts.
The car still has ten months warranty so i'm inclined to use the dealer - or atleast to get a quote from them - so the warranty stays intact. I don't know how much fuel was put in but the planned journey was about 120 miles so I think it was a bit more than a dribble.

Twenty years ago, when I was a matrimonial lawyer, I drafted section 8 particulars of unreasonable behaviour on lesser actions. It's still the case that paying the dealership bill will be cheaper than the solicitor's one for a contested Petition.

Not 100% sure with LR pumps but i know alot of other manufacturers would insist on the pump being changed (especially if it's a high pressure unit).

Decide which kidney to sell. I did this in an escort 15 years ago and it was a new engine at £1600 then!

I hope it isn't as bad for you.

When I got mine from the stealer (Over 4 years ago now Shocked ) the last thing he told me was NOT to misfuel it as it would cost over £1500.00 to put right!!

Hope he was wrong.

SWMBO owes you big time!!!

Shouldn't be a new engine, just lots of bits.

If it has been ran until it stopped then LR say the HP pump, HP pipes, injectors (x6), both fuel rails and fuel filter must be replaced. Aswell as removing the tank to fully drain it. And then a full tank of Diesel. Normally comes to a few thousand pounds.

When I had my d3 for only a week or two, I very nearly refilled with petrol, but only luck prevented me as the fuel nozzle was too short. After that, I fitted one of those misfuel devices. Yes, it does make filling up time slightly longer, but at least I know I wont get hit by a large bill.
