| dip head lights seem to low |
|
Hi Can anyone help. When disco 3 lights are on dip they seem too low. how can I adjust them up so they throw forward a bit further. They just seem to low and are a pain when driving.

Hi,
This is what you need

You'll need a reasonably long cross head screwdriver, which engages with the adjustment screw at the back of the light unit. I did mine whilst parked about 2 metres from my garage door, bit trial and error, but worked a treat. Never get mad - get even !!

so its not the 2 8mm bolts heads that are in a similar position to the arrows coming out horizontally?

It is, but they have 'geared' washers to enable you to turn them with a cross head screwdriver from above. You can use an 8mm spanner or socket if you wish, but the screwdriver is easier. In my experience you have to turn the screws a fair bit to get any decent amount of movement.

Stephen,
I think its only the base 5 seater that has a headlight adjustment by the switch, on cars with self levelling air suspension that is expected to maintain the headlights at the right level....

No there isn't a headlamp leveling switch on the light switch. Cheap model i'm afraid. I read the lights automatically level and the bolts, as mentioned, only adjust the full beam halogen light. Im assuming since I have air suspension and the high voltage light I fit into the "2) Vehicle Headlamp Leveling" underlined group copied below:
HEADLAMP LEVELLING
Headlamp levelling provides for the adjustment of the vertical aim of the headlamps. The levelling system is primarily
required to minimise glare to other road users when a heavy load is in the rear of the vehicle.
Three systems of headlamp levelling are available; manual, static and dynamic.
1)Manual Headlamp Levelling
Manual headlamp levelling is only available on vehicles with halogen headlamps and coil spring suspension.
The manual system comprises the following components:
ô€º Two headlamp levelling motors
ô€º Headlamp levelling rheostat rotary control.
When the ignition switch is in the ignition position (II), power is supplied to the lighting control switch via the ignition relay
in the battery junction box and to the headlamp levelling motor in each headlamp assembly via the CJB. When the lighting
control rotary switch is moved to the side lamp or headlamp position, the supply from the ignition relay is passed to the
levelling rotary control.
Movement of the levelling rotary control produces a variable voltage output, which is sensed by the motors. The motors
react to the supplied voltage and move the headlamp to the requested position which relates to the supplied voltage from
the levelling rotary control.
The headlamps can only be lowered from their unladen position to compensate for changes in vehicle attitude due to
loading.
2)Vehicle Headlamp Leveling
Vehicle headlamp levelling is only available on vehicles with air suspension.
Vehicle headlamp levelling is performed by the air suspension system and the air suspension control module. The
suspension system constantly monitors the vehicle attitude and adjusts the height of the front and/or rear of the vehicle
accordingly. This maintains the correct vehicle attitude and consequently maintains the correct headlamp beam
alignment.
The vehicle levelling system is fully automatic, therefore the lighting control switch does not have the manual levelling
rotary control.
3) Dynamic Headlamp Levelling (Air Suspension)
Dynamic headlamp levelling is only available on vehicles with the AFS system and air suspension.
The dynamic headlamp levelling adjusts the vertical alignment of the headlamps as a rapid response to changes in
vehicle attitude due to acceleration or braking.
The dynamic system is fully automatic, therefore the lighting control switch does not have the manual levelling rotary
control.
NOTE :
The dynamic system comprises the following components:
ô€º Two headlamp levelling motors
ô€º AFS control module
ô€º Engine running signal from engine control module
ô€º Vehicle speed information from ABS module
The AFS system also operates in conjunction with the vehicle levelling system as described previously.[/i]
Many thanks. I might just be being thick. but the full beam is fine just dipped is crap only throws 20 yards or so About the same as my mondao (company car not choice!) does on the lowest light adjustment.

Even on the auto systems there is adjustment as described - LR aren't that good as to get every light/body perfectly aligned as to not need a basic starting point! Mark.

Was wondering the same about mine as they seem really low (I have the bi-xenons). Thought I'd find out the legal maximum distance for the top of the beam. Did not expect finding that info to be so hard! Seems it's somewhere between 45-100m. Bet someone here knows the definitive answer.

Are the instructions above the same for the bi-xenons? The screws don't seem to be the same, or am I just being stupid? 2005 D3 HSE

Adjusted them and went for a drive not sure if its changed the level but the main beam has gone up.
The copied extract seems to be for all lights mine are the bi xenon I think at least they are the very high voltage ones with the lens in the lights so assume them to be.
I would have agreed about landrover not being that clever but if they were auto adjusting they wouldn't need to be surely.

After some guidance here please 
So I looked at the PDF posted by disco_steve(http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...stment.pdf) earlier in the thread
and tried to adjust my Left headlight (passenger side) low beam upwards by turning the gear/ratchet type adjusters.
I Mostly turned (from left to right, i.e. from the bumper towards the windshield) the outside (B arrow in PDF) adjuster closest to the fender
(Left hand side headlight it is) and the dipped beam did not move (upwards or downwards).
Then tried the inner adjuster and also no movement on the low beam.
Which way does one turn for up - bumper to windshield (left to right)or windshield to bumper (right to left)?
How many turns before one start seeing movement?
Is a 2005 TDV6 HSE
Many thanks for clearing up this little lack of understanding on my side
