Great news that you've finally got it back. And no problem for the assistance, you were flying along the right lines already. Thumbs Up just sometimes need a little errrrr persuasion Wink

Hello can anybody help I am new to this forum, I have a 2007 discovery 3 today I pulled up at work and noticed a noise from engine, after taking off the fan cowel I noticed a pulley stuck in the fan belt. It turns out it is my timing belt pulley it has broken off of the oil pump. It seems to have been cracked for a while, and there was minimal metal holding it on. I think it actually broke on start up. The car has done 129,000 and the belt was done by main dealer on the 17/05/13. What can I do? Where do I stand?

kind regards George

Welcome George

Has it been serviced by LR Dealers throughout?

Search here you will see that if that is the case there's a possibility that LR might contribute to the new engine which you are likely to need.

Whereabouts in Hampshire are you from?

Good luck, keep us posted.

Another 07MY there will hardly be any left on the road that this hasn't happened to, hope you get a bit of help at least in repairing it, fingers crossed.

Are you sure it is the Cam belt tensioner pulley ? that wouldn't be visible normally......and it would be a miracle that the engine was still running when you arrived at work, if it was indeed a busted tensioner mounting.Rolling Eyes

Hi I'm in Botley Southampton, the pulley has broken from the oil pump, I have a feeling it happened when I started up after noticing a noise under the bonnet. I can tell it is the cambelt pulley as it has smashed through the plastic cover and I can get my hand on the cambelt. There is about an inch of play but it is still intact. What are the odds that if I replace the oil pump with new ungraded pulley and put the belt back on that it will not have done any damage?
I'm so Censored off but how was I to know!

Hi, was the engine still running with no nasty noises up to when you noticed the pulley hanging off? Obviously don't try to start it now. If so you may have been very lucky and a new oil pump, tensioner, belt etc and it may be ok, but if the engine ground to a halt amidst a clatter, you will have a major job on your hands Rolling Eyes Good luck, hope you've been lucky. Thumbs Up

You might have been very lucky. If the belt is still on the pulleys, and it just failed at start up, I think the tensioner pulley is on the slack side of the belt, so maybe the belt was still on the crank and cam pulleys, and kept things in time?

Someone with more experience of this will chip in I am sure, but whatever you do, do not turn the engine over until damage or no damage is verified.

I've certainly seen people get the majority of a repair paid for by LR. Especially if they're the ones that changed the timing belt.
Key to it always is comprehensive service schedule. Thumbs Up

The assistant manager at hardwoods didn't have much time for me tbh considering it had a cam belt kit by them! This shouldn't have happened! He said bring it down and we can have a look but you will be liable for the bill. I will just keep my fingers crossed that it hasn't done to much damage why would the engine turn over without firing? obviously this morning when I went to start it I didn't know the tensioner had burst through cowling?

Hi all,
Does anyone have any pictures of the original 05/06 pump casing, presumably it looked like the new version - if it is stronger?
Andi.

Wanted to pick up on this. What has changed about the pumps in the vulnerable (if not an understatement) range - to make it a definite requirement to change them, but not the pumps prior to the vulnerable range - if both look identical?

I don't know, is the easy answer Laughing

The EU3 and EU4 pumps LOOK identical, but have different ID marks etc, and a new part number.

Whether it was a change in material, or a poor casting, or something else, who knows. No one has been particularly forthcoming with information on anything related to oil pumps Rolling Eyes

That said, EU3 pumps are not immune from breaking off the tensioner either, but no where near as common
