It is not hard to figure out - you feel the gear engaging, engine stops, and for me it is not hard to feel/hear the engine turning. since the car is moving backwards in forward gear the engine must rotate backwards.
Of course it does not turn backwards very long, since anybody will automaticly push the brake when it happens.

Since Steve wrote the engine is running after the housing breaks, the engine turning opposite direction is not the thing that makes it break though it vill stress the tensioner bracket (oilpump housing) more when it happens.

engine turning left or right, forward or backward, anyway, i do not really understand WHEN (which MY's) the "stiff" oilpump was installed!? Shocked

it says here that only 07A till 08A are critical manufacturing years. would mean that for example a MY05 should have the "stiff" oilpump installed?!
but i never saw at any pictures in the web, maintenance books, etc. the "stiff" oilpump installed!!

is it possible that only the latest models MY09 have the "stiff" one installed?! Rolling Eyes

As for the engine turning backwards. The only way it will happen is if the car is in gear, the engine cuts out, the car is left in gear, and it rolls backwards (or forwards, in reverse gear)

The above will only apply to a manual gearbox. Auto's work in a completely different way...

IF, and its a big IF, that were the case, when the engine is turned backwards, it does release tension on the belt slightly. For that reason, engines should only be rotated in the running direction

At this point, I would say we have a prime candidate for the whole oil pump issue, but it also happens on Auto vehicles, which renders that whole theory as incorrect

These things do happen, but are few & far between compared to the number out there.... have a look on the audi or bmw forums about engine failures, small ends etc.... it happens to all manufacturers.

They aren't connected to a tensioner bracket failure.

How common is this failure compared to the crank breaking or bearings rotating? And how common are these total breakdowns overall? I Think i see quite a few cars for sale with new motors...

Is it the same bearings/oilpump housing on the tdv8, MY2007?

My cars are auto ones. If you say that the motors on these Can't be forced to turn backwards, then why does the motor shut off and sounds like it is turned when the car is Rolling backwards in forward gear? I don't See any other explanation than the gear engaged?

I will Read into this, but for now, if you know the reason why the engine stops if the car is put into forward gear While the car is Rolling backwards slowly, i would like to know.

I have had it a few times on customers cars. Always when cold.

Always starts up straight away again... No idea why, but its not the engine turning backwards

ÃŽ managed to stall mine with reverse torque when I messed up a section on a trials course in Germany on the H4H rally. Was cross-axled on a very steep climb and span out with an over-enthusiastic use of right foot, so lost traction and slid back, causing all four wheels to regain traction as I slid off the cross-axle section. At this point the car stalled, the back wheels dug in, the front wheels momentarily left the ground and my passenger made a funny, warm, brown noise..... Whistle

Engine and box were warm, low range rock crawl engaged.

Haven't managed to do it again and the waterproof seat covers washed out a treat. Thumbs Up
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

....Really wish I'd seen this thread before buying my 57plate!! Shocked

Just how worried should I really be?

I knew the belts needing doing next year on age alone as she's only done 41k... FLSH from new until the (generic) garage I've just bought it from allegedly did a service before selling.

Although I don't have my VIN to hand it obviously is going to fall into the dodgy oil pump category, and therefore better to get changed I assume?

Is there anywhere in recommended in South Manchester?

I posted elsewhere on the site last night and was directed to this thread. We were travelling at 70ish on the M6 last night when I heard a thud, the engine died and I had to coast onto the hard shoulder. Particularly scary given I had the wife and our three kids in the car....

Anyway, now the starter motor turns but nothing from the engine and so, having read this thread, given I have an 07 plate, 145k miles and had a belt change at c.105k, I'm starting to fear the worst. As an absolute novice is there any way I can confirm diagnosis myself or do I need to get it into LR?

I will also clearly take this up with LRCS but given the high mileage and that I am not the first owner I am not banking on their support. It does have a full LR service history and I am only the second owner though.......
