As far as I know all these things are from registration date. It doesn't matter that your car sat in a field for 8 months before it was sold, like mine. Big Cry

It goes by chassis number/build date Thumbs Up

I'm not too sure you do stand corrected. Whistle

Build date should be irrelevant. Warranty start date is the true measure and the warranty start date usually coincides with first registration and PDI.

So for my car:

Build date: 11-Jan-2013
Warranty start date: 29-Jan-2013

All my warranty (not sure I can remember that far back) & service stuff was from reg date (Apr 06) even though mine was built Aug or Sept 05. that's what I was thinking of. Whistle

Build date can be an 06 chassis number, but not registered until 2007.

Need the chassis number to identify the correct parts, as opposed to the registration date Thumbs Up

Can anyone say for how long they continued to use an inferior oil pump?

My D3 - was built on 2nd July 2008 - VIN: LAAA179A 494nnn - should I replace the oil pump when the belts are done?

The car wasn't registered until April 2009, but I assume the 7 years for belt changes etc. runs from the build date, not the registration date?

Having re-read the thread this morning Embarassed

The service intervals start from when the car was first registered.
However, the chassis number confirms the oil pump is the 1st supercession of the original pump. 77

In this case, rather safe than sorry, and recommend it should be done. That said though, when the belt is off, it can be checked to see if it is the stronger design Thumbs Up

Many thanks I entirely agree with your thoughts about better safe than sorry.

My D3 has done 47k miles to date, so the belt change will be driven by time rather than mileage. I intend to keep the car until it's 10 years old or thereabouts; my thought is that it's prudent to do the belts in the next 12 months/10k miles.

I'm about to change the transfer box oil. I've changed the oil & filter every 6 months in addition to the regular services in the hope of prolonging engine life.

I just had the oil pump changed when the belts were done. To me it's just not worth the risk

Can someone summarize which pumps are the suspect ones (to save me reading all 21 pages of this topic!)?

My D3 falls in to the bold range above, had the belts changed at 90k service (20k miles done since then), should I be grateful I've still got over two years warranty on it?

I've also just had the timing belts service (105K) and oil pump done at 95K

Visual examination of the the oil pump did not show any indications of failure, but I'm viewing the extra cost as insurance.

However, visual inspection of the timing belt showed a 18 inch long thin strip coming off one edge. Glad I decided to do the change 10K early.

Thanks to all at Green Oval Garage in Leeds for a good price and a job well done.

Regards,
Steve

Hi guys

Had my timing belt done last week, and the oil pump/casing, parts were another 52 quid for the casing (plus fitting) along with all the other ancils too

Defiantly worth doing.... The car seems to be more responsive too. It's also worth noting that there was a strip on the inside edge of the belt that was damaged... the work was done at 79k (6 and a half years) .

Cheers

Joe
