I would wait until you know for sure what it is first.. are you sure both belts were changed, it could just be the rear belt if this was not changed.. but if it is the front tensioner thats gone then your engine will be destroyed inside if your wife was traveling at speed when it went.

Not good news but your not the only one it has happened too, you need to get is assessed by someone who knows what they are looking for and I would not let the garage that did the belts look at it get an independent to do that.

Really sorry to hear of your failure.

I would get a camera first, before anything else. Were any fault codes read before you were recovered? if any camshaft sensor erros, then its likely to be the same issue as you've been reading about.

With camera in hand, get the front timing belt cover taken off Take photos during this process. When you get the cover off, (even if its at the repair place that did it, insist that you be present before the do anything on it) take more photos of what sounds like the same failure. If the tensioner is still attached to the broken bit of oil pump, take plenty of clear photos and DO NOT take the tensioner bolt out or otherwise make any detrimental changes to the vehicle as it stands.

IF your photos look anything like the ones from mine (or others on here) then I would firstly register the complaint with LR Customer service. As long as youhave been serviced to LR spec, it doesnt need to be with LR directly. Then, I can provide you with some other contacts to escalate the issue to if needed.

They will almost certainly ask you to take it to a proper LR Dealer for inspection. Dont worry if you do, they cannot do anything on your car without your permission, be clear that it is for inspection purposes only. You may be able to negotiate that they collect it and pay for the inspection. In any case DO NOT let ANYONE dispose of any of the fluids (oil etc) or dispose or material change anything (this includes LR, make sure you are clear on this with them). Even to the extent of leaving signs to the effect in the car and engine bay (I did).

I'm not saying that you would need to, but these items are important if you should ever need to get a Forensic Engineer to do a proper report on the failure.

Above all, assuming the failure is the same as I have experienced, be persistant and clear in what you want. i.e you want a replacement engine from them for this 'premature and catastrophic failure of a component (oil pump) that has been re-designed 3 times (4 versions) during its short life span" ......

Of course, feel free to point them to this thread for evidence of additional failures of the same type, which could be interpreted as an persistent failure of that component.

Hi All, My 2008 57 plate disco is due for its cam belt change (105.000) and after reading this got realy worried. I rang My local Landrover dealer and got a quote off them for £786.00, i managed to get them down to £700 for both belts and stressed my concerns to the guy about the failures. He re assured me that if the work was done there and at a later date this failure was to happen he would do all he can to replace the engine. He also said he was aware of the problem and that they recently had one recovered with this exact same problem. Im almost certain i will put it in with them as i feel he was being genuine and would help in the future. Do you think this is a fair price or should i shop around.

You should check that this quote includes VAT & replacing (in addition to all belts - front & rear) both idler pulleys, bolts & tensioner & bolts.

You should also ask them to confirm that all parts used will be LR parts & ask for the old parts from the cam belt change, especially the rear tensioner pulley & check that this is so.

You should consider replacing the water pump - in which case the whole system should be flushed & refilled with new coolant.

You might also consider replacing the oil pump assembly & bolts - new plate for 07 onwards is
LR013487 £47.04 forum price - 3 hours extra labour when doing all belts etc...

NJSS the price included vat and pulleys tensioners etc. Forgott about the aux belts but did mention to him about replacing the oil pump brackett causing the problems but he kind of passed it off and worrying enough said you cant just get the brackett which i know is not true but didnt challenge it as he then went on sayng if it was to fail he would fight my corner and get them to replace the engine. Im not sure what to do as i can probably get the cam belt and brackett replaced at my local garage for around about the same price and i trust them because they have always service and maintain my vans. Not sure which way to go do i go for the dealership and hope that it doesnt fail and if it did i would hopefully have there back up or try to prevent this and change all from my local garage.

Forgott to add all LR origonal parts being used. Also my egr valve has just gone how much for a new valve

I would strongly suggest renewing the oil pump when doing the belt on affected models (see further up this post for chassis ranges, basically 2007 -2009)
Your original engine running well will probably be a better bet than a recon engine & all the hassle of disturbing everything & the problems that come with that, regardless of who's paying

Don't expect it to be an easy ride if your engine goes pop with this fault there are only two cases I know of that have had any success or help on winning there case, and if this garage is saying you can't get the oil pump casing then I would not be taking my car to them..

Even if you go to a main dealer don't expect to much from LR on this..

All Points taken and appreciated. At the end of the day we should not have to worry about this problem it should just be a straight forward cam belt change and then more happy driving. Seriously thinking of geting my local to do it with the oil pump change as i know even if Hatfields Landrover were to fight my corner it would be messy and time consuming. Just wish we had the backup of Landrover on this. What would you guys do? Also not having much luck EGR drivers side has gone and was wondering how i go about getting a new one from this site. Will i be able to get it cheaper than the garage would get it for. Just to add incase there is a missunderstanding my origonal price was from the dealership Hatfields Liverpool

If you have to fit a new EGR valve it may be more cost effective to have the body off to do all the work at one time.

In which case you could also:-

Check the other EGR & the turbo & turbo pipes

Check (& probably replace) rear brake lines

Check anti-roll bar bushes

Check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine

Wash chassis & underside of body, and apply or reapply Waxoil.

Cost is, of course material, and much will depend on your intention to keep the car long-term or not.

My current view is that I will do a "half-life" refit addressing all the above issues early, at about half the mileage I am expecting to do in the car, probably at about 5 years/70k miles.

Just replaced cam belt

Just finished fitting new cam belt/tensioner at 104,00 ready for towing trip to France and patting myself on the back, despite it taking nearly 10 hours with starter motor removal and wondering why some nutter has put the bolt in for the fuel cooler top down??

Anyway not so chuffed now I have read this thread, seriously worried. Big Cry

My Disco is 6A403XXX and has the original reduced webbing around the belt tensioner mounting. I read in another thread that 7xxxxxx onwards seem to be the problem ones and that the LR part number for mine would remain the same presumably with same build spec/quality?

Not wanting to pin anyone down but what would your advice be, change the oil pump or.....? Bow down

Just had a quick scan through this thread as I'm going to replce the timing belt on my D3 soon.

Can anyone relate the known issue to an engine number range rather than VIN number?

The reason being that my 55plate HSE with a 5A VIN number had a new engine fitted under warranty in -youve guessed it - July 2007, so my VIN number doesn't relate to the age of the engine, the VIN number is supposedly too early, but the engine may be effected.

If its an 07 or o 8MY then based on my current experience i would change the oil pump casing- the failure seems to occur after a belt change. Mines did- 10000m later.

But I am sure there are other many and varied opinions about to come along.

It's only £52 but you wont want to hear that after having done all he work

Jack, only a few of the 6a have failed for this fault, whereas the 7a onwards have had quite a few.

You should be fine tbh.

Nasher, yours would have been euiii spec replacement so should be fine.
