United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Java BlackDiscovery 3

Fair enough - I get max. of 1 second of rattle on cold start - nowhere near enough to bother me.

Belt/pulleys/tensioner were changed yesterday, along with water pump and OSF wheel bearing, NS reportedly on way out but will attempt DIY.

Cam Belt tensioner mount

Hi Folks.
Having read all the reports on the dreaded tensioner mount, I'm wondering if any of you 'in the know' can advise me. I have an 07 D3 SE, VIN No. SALLAAA138A446668. It's due a cam belt change which is going to be done shortly as it's on 80,000 miles. It would seem to be sensible to change the oil pump cover with part No. LR 013487. Any comments?
It's also going in for a megaflush tomorrow at a specialist ZF man here in Cornwall who has now done a number of Discos and Range Rovers with what appears to be remarkable results.

I replaced the oil seal without the tool, unfortunately it still leaked, I went ahead and purchased the tool and installed a new seal using the tool, sadly its still leaking, is it possible that there might be something wrong with the crankshaft surface? does the oil seal wear out the crankshaft surface over time?

Cambelt tensioner broke...

Hi All,
Further to the recommendation from Bodsey regarding fitting a replacement oil pump/casing whilst doing the belts, here's an update.
I've recently had a gearbox megaflush by an indy LR company here in Cornwall and it has certainly made a difference, not almighty, but defo an improvement. They let me watch the flushing procedure and the oil that came out was black. They state that ZF recommend this at 50 to 60,000 miles. Also had them replace the sump for a metal ZF unit with a replaceable filter.
So now I decided to go for the belt and oil pump change myself. What can I say!! It took ages, not because it's particularly difficult but because there is so much stuff to remove before you get anywhere near the belts. I followed the Haynes manual for most of it and used 'common sense' for the rest. That starter motor really is a fiddle isn't it?
A point regarding the fitting of the crankshaft seal - in the instructions supplied with the seal, it states that the crankshaft must obviously be clean and DRY. It also states that the seal material needs to bed in for at least 4 hours before any movement of the crank. The fitting of the seal DRY is apparently critical. So, along with not rushing and the odd bit of taking bits off again to check stuff I thought I might have forgotten (old age you know!), and plenty of tea breaks, the total time taken was about a day and a half. However having done it once and now knowing how it's done I could probably do the whole job (pump casing and all) in a day. Oh, by the way it was carried out on the drive, No 4 poster lift!!
End result......... All working fine and no oil or water leaks. Just to give you youngsters a bit of encouragement, I'll be 73 in October. So if I can do it, so can you, no harm in blowing your own trumpet is there?
The mileage on my Disco3 is now 81,000. Despite some of the expensive foibles on these machines, they really are a fabulous bit of kit.

Oops, forgot to mention that the oil pump casing that came off appeared to be OK with no sign of fracture. There is definitely an improved design on the new one, so peace of mind innit?

Thats not a bad time considering you had not done that job before, they can be quite a job if anything is seized up, It usually takes me about 4.5 hours to do the rear and front belt including the Oil pump casing.

Flack Thumbs Up

another oil pump housing failure

D3 2.7 57 plate - so already in the wrong time bracket !
Driving yesterday and it all stopped - front of engine removed to discover the tensioner has broken off the oil pump and the internal components argued with themselves ending in destruction.
The car has a full service history and replaced timing belt last year. One owner from new.

The 07 MR seems to be key in the failure rate. Does anyone have any advice, I am without a car - I have hired a tiny thing for 2 weeks at £400 and have no idea what to do so some questions.
Does anyone have details of a decent refurbishment company -Do NWS look OK

Any help or advice that can be offered is hugely appreciated

Pour a big glass of vino then do a search on "tensioner", there's easily an evening's reading. Some peeps have had LR pick up the bill, some have had nothing. LR Cust Services have been very helpful in some cases, deffo worth a try.

another oil pump housing failure Report post

Well after nearly 2 months without a car I finally have the Disco back with a new engine. Thumbs Up
I must thank LR for contributing significantly towards the cost without which I was contemplating scrapping the car as it simply was not worth the £10K + bill.
The guys at the main dealer in Basingtoke (not sure if I can mention the dealership name ) were fabulous and very supportive.
The process was long, frustrating, stressful and not at all straight forward. Although I am very grateful I must add that it seemed somewhat a war of attrition and felt as if it was coming down to who gave in first and it wasn't going to be me.
I must pay a huge thank you to Bodsy for some sound advice Bow down and for the determination to keep going - I am sure many give up half way through.
If it happens to you don't give up

I also had many PM's from members offering support - big thank you for that Thumbs Up

Yippeeeeeee Mr. Green
