The bottom bolt is first tightened to 100Nm and then a further 90 degrees so you would need a torque loader that will go to 100Nm and then a big breaker bar to do the 90 degrees. I have a three quarter inch drive breaker bar thats over a meter long to do the 90 degrees and its still takes some tightening even with this bar so thats why you need to lock the crank with the special tool in the flywheel and because the bottom pulley does not have a locating key way to stop it turning when you torque the bolt.

Steve your right but when you look at the one I fitted to my 2007 the only difference is the beefed up material around the tensioner mount as compared to a 2005 one, so although they are different part numbers its the same part apart from the beefed up bit.

Hello Flack, so you think that the last piece is also compatible with the model 05?

Hi all,

I've been led to this thread from another one as I've just gone through the ordeal of my cam tensioner disintegrating 25k before.

Thanksfully JLR have agreed, well even offered to cover 100% of the repair cost, or in this case new engine costs....

Ive got a 58 plate so seems like there is an issue with the part!

Unnecessary quote removed

That's interesting.

Could you let us know the specifics of how you communicated with them? Was it through the dealers or direct.

I'm in the VIN range at 77K miles and not had a belt change yet.

Regards,
Steve

I had my old oil pump casing cracked detected today and they could not not see any crack's or fractures beginning in and around the area of the cam belt tensioner mount, but the guy did comment that the material thickness around that area is thin to say the least.

I wonder...

What happens if you put a bolt into the relevant place on that plate and either tighten to the required torque or over-tighten if there isn't a specified value.

And then get it tested again.

My guess is that this may be the cause of the failures on an already sub-standard part.

Hope I've made myself clear.

Steve

Hi Steve...I simply called the Customer Relations teams..explained what had happened, they then spoke to the dealer as it had to be diognosed at an approved franchise...pictures were taken and the part sent to JLR, a week latere I got a call saying they would pay. But go direct to JLR through the customer relations team...or just get it changed earlier than the 105k they suggest. they mentioned to me that as there was evidence of "arduous" usage, it might be questionable, they consider the service schedule null and voind if you off-road (greenlane) or anything like that. I was expecting them to say I'd have to contribute but they didnt...but i could see them trying.

Mine was clearly spec'd up for off road and muddy, no problem with mine and no mention from LR. I'm betting it was the dealer that mentioned that....

Magic words: "Fit for Purpose". If the LR service schedule doesn't cover 'normal' off-roading, then the vehicle they sold you wasn't fit for purpose.

My D3 is an MY 07 with approx 93000 miles on the clock. I've just stumbled across this discussion & don't really know where to go from here. Had already decided (after advice from other forum members) to have the belts done early at the 6 year service in December by a local Independent. Would I be better advised to use the main dealer?

Richard.

Folks - I have just read all 16 pages and am now downright depressed as earlier this evening Mrs G called to say that our MY07-90,000miles had just failed on the motorway-symptoms and post recovery diagnosis matches the tensioner bracket failure.
So two questions-
1. Is the engine completely goosed as a result-not clear from all posts above or is it fixable with a shed load of bits? I am still in optimistic mode that a new bracket and some tlc will sort it out.
2. Friendly and capable local garage but not LR specialist who carried out recovery in 15 minutes is willing to tackle it but cautious after replacing my turbo last year(exactly) and he did the timing belts at the same time(I hadn't read the stuff about the tensioner mount then!).

Or ship to Strathearn-not far away -

Welcome to Disco 3 ownership-80000 miles of trouble free motoring, 10000 miles of grief.
