Some 11 years ago, my kids treated me to a days off-road training for my 50th birthday. The training was done by Pro-Trax at Market Harborough and at Tixover.
Part of the Tixover training was climbing very steep inclines. The LR I was in was a Defender LWB, manual. On one of the ascents the instructor knocked the gear lever into manual, my reaction being to stamp on the brake and clutch pedals. To get out of the situation, I was instructed to stop the engine, put the gears into reverse, ease up the clutch and release the brake pedal, thereby leaving the Defender hanging on its reverse gear. I was told to start the engine, and descend the incline in a controlled manner backwards. This was accomplished with ease and I was quite impressed with my achievement.
I have had various 4X4, being Ford Maverick , 2 Isuzu Troopers 2.8 Tdi's , Vauxhall Frontera Sport 2.8 Tdi . These were used purely for tintent towing duties and never used off-road, so my days training was to some degree wasted.
Using the above scenario with the Defender and the controlled reverse incline descent, how would this be achieved in an automatic D3?? I can only think of a similar situation due to a stalled engine. Hanging an automatic D3 on reverse gear is unlikely as I assume it would roll backwards without any mechanical hold? I can't say as I've tried it, but surely in reverse and low ratio it should work the same as going forwards in 1st, I find there's still a fair amount of engine braking even with an auto, so long as the correct gear is selected.
Also, doesn't the HDC work in reverse too?Clive

This is an exercise that is quite well known and good for learning to deal with stall situations when climbing steep banks.
Not really necessary for an auto as it's unlikely to stall (although not impossible), but it's still worthwhile driving up a bank, sticking the auto-box in reverse and practice letting it roll back down without touching either pedal....2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Done what? Letting it roll/drive back down a steep hill in reverse gear without touching the pedals? I do it all the time....

I did some training in the spring with Protrax in the D3. The first thing we learnt was how to deal with a failed hill climb. I asked the question and was told 'Yes' HDC works in reverse and I think it did but still had a brown trouser moment as it didn't seem to slow the vehicle as much as when going forward, even with adjustment from the cruise. Since playing about on steep inclines on tarmac I am still undecided as to its effectiveness in reverse?
On another note - does anyone consider it best practice to turn DSC off when going for a speedy slippy hill climb? Is a certain amount of smoke normal, I'm sure I had my brakes on fire!?

yes Done it on quite a number of occasions.
HDC does work in reverse gear as well.
Also, if you have the D3 in gear (and in CommandShift) and stop halfway up an ascent it will roll back a little bit but then the engince/transmission will hold it without need to apply the brakes. Clever little thing...isn't it...The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
