Roof rack recommendations?

Hello to all - this being my first post here.

Had my D3 TDV6 SE for about 6 months now, and finding it fabulous. Just wanted to know the consensus on the best option for a roof rack. Factory suppied optional "expedition rack" is an obvious choice, but I believe aftermarket jobbies are often better engineered for local conditions? Also, if fitting aftermarket rack, would I need the factory roof rail kit?

Hello zetecr and welcome to the forum.

i have the frontrunner rack, it's fantastic and mounts to the existing LT captive nuts.

In Australia is sold by Opposite Lock (www.oppositelock.com.au) and marketed as 'Rackmaster'.

Tradesman Engineering in Melbourne also do one of their Oval racks for the D3. PCH has one. I believe that these also use the captive nut system.

If you want the LR Expedition rack then you'll need the standard roof rails as well

I joined in for the frontrunner purchase - there are a couple of shots in my gallery.
Here's one:

Baben has a couple of shots in his gallery.
Here's the close up of the frontrunner rails (more substantial than the LR ones and fit over the gutter strips):

I purchased the Tradesman Oval made in Melbourne from TJM , it fits into the captive bolts in the roof. I cut and refitted the plastic strip so a very neet job. As with most racks a little bit of wind noise and an increase of 1 litre per 100 km.
I opted for the full length one it is very strong and weighs only about 25 kg aprox.
I only put it on when I need to use it, this is very easy as I use my forklift and carefully lower it on to some foam then remove the foam and gently place onto the bolt holes very easy! Smile Smile

Hi all,

Just getting back from being off with the flu. I'm almost half better now.

Ye I have the Tradesman rack an it is good but I also ike the Rackmaster with the cross rail mounting system for accessories that the Tradesman doesn't have.

The Tradesman rack bolts directly onto the mounting nuts on the D3 roof. The full length rack with half mesh floor and half top rail weighs around 35kg so it is no light weight. Add a roof top tent and you are up at 100kg. That's 30kg above the LR specified roof top dynamic load Shocked

Certainly look around now because there are many more options than 1 year ago. I think you will be spending about $1000+ for a good reliable rack.

I've got a Rhino Rack Alloy tray on Rhino aero crossbars. This gives me the flexibilty to have just the crossbars for long loads, or the full alloy tray with a racksack for bulky items. I usually have the alloy tray mounted on the crossbars and take it on and off as one piece, and it's easy using the rear tail gate. ARB supplied the whole thing for me, and the good thing is that it's interchangable with other vehicles, just change the mounting system. I used to have it on a Prado.

Cheers
