I have used a sat nav unit and GPS speed warning units (Road Angel, Belkin and Cyclops) on various Ford/Jag/LR product and have always sited the unit where it was best for me to see/use (usually just offset from wheel towards centre of dash) despite advice that it wouldn't work properly with heated screens fitted. I have never had a problem with any of them in any car in the UK or mainland europe.
If you do have some patchy reception problems if you fit it to the most outboard edge of the screen by the 'A' pillar there is an area with no wires in the glass (as they run in straight lines and screens aren't 'square' - more pronounced on normal cars than a Disco' though as their screens are less square shaped) which should improve it a little more if required
