Un-removeable towbar help

Thought I would get around to fitting my new towbar and electrics this afternoon.
Electrics were a bit of a pain in the bum, but got there in the end.

The problem is the towbar. I inserted it into the slot, turned the key a half turn anti-clockwise, and took the key out. Great, that was easier than I feared.

O.K., now to remove it. Insert key, turn half turn clockwise, try to remove towbar whilst pulling green handle down. It won't release. I have spent over an hour wrestling with the thing. Have tried key in all positions. The latch inside the towbar won't withdraw any further into the towbar regardless of key position. I turn the green handle, but the latch won't go in far enough to release.
Am I missing something here. HELP!! The key number is the same as that on the lock.

Not sure but at some stage don't you have to push the green handle thing to its right, i.e. away from the towbar to get it to undo?

If it makes you feel any better mine releases easily, then I can't get the key out, that towbar is a bit to big for a keyfob! Very Happy

The green handle won't push that way at all.

Mine is a Censored to get out once in as well (tow bar!!!! Gentlemen please), but I'm sure there's a knack. And once out the key stays in, but I thought that was what it was meant to do.

Hi Si,

I had a similar problem getting the towbar to insert. (opposite problem to you i know) but... a few strategic squirts of WD40(actually sprayed loads) and no further problems.

also to remove - looking at the towbar from behind you need to pull the green handle to the left (expose the red) then twist downwards and it should drop out.

With it unlocked turn and pull the handle as far as you can and it should drop out. Mine sticks but that's normally coz it got mud in it, I find few taps with a rubber mallet or a bit of wood frees it up. The key can only be removed in the locked position and it can only be fully locked when it's inserted, saves you loosing the key when it not in use

As the others have said, you need to PULL on the handle as well as twist. There is a good thread on the RRS forum on this together with photos.

The keys are quite fragile. Maybe that's why they give you two?

I don't believe that the key is meant to remain in!

Once you have removed the tow bar, get a hammer and tap on the bolt thingo that slides in and out to lock into the receiver bit on the car. It will drop back into the tow bar and the key can easily be removed.

Rolling with laughter Jamo, so you went for the easy options - the universal tool a.k.a. the hammer - it says nothing about using a hammer on the instructions, but if that's what it takes? I'm gonna hold you responsible for any damage Wink

Well Mossy, I figure that the towbar is good for at least 3,500kg, and whilst I know I'm strong....

I spent some time in armour and we were always taught to 'use correct tools correctly' and 'don't use excessive force'. But if something got stuck, then grab the American screwdriver! Very Happy
