Verifying Vehicle Identity |
|
I have found a disco that I want to buy and agreed a deal. However as this is a private seller I want to be sure that the vehicle is not cloned.
What is the best way to check and is there a company/service that will check it over for me? I have checked myself and all seems above board but I dont know enough to be sure.

The AA and RAC both carry out vehicle inspections for a fee, could be worth it if you are not confident and don't want to get caught out .

Bit reluctant to put a photo of the reg on the net as I may end up buying it and dont want the reg for all to see.
It is quite distintive though in the fact that its a well specced up "S" model but with sat nav and harmon kardon and HSE wheels. Original owner was from Hampshire or Surrey way. Has had another owner in Suffolk since then. Comes with pretty much every receipt since new and lots of old MOT's which match what is on the DVLA MOT records.
HPI all comes up ok with VIN numbers etc
The only worry is that they have only had it since April this year. They say they dont use it and want a new defender instead.
Spoken to the AA and RAC
The AA wont actually guarantee the identity and the person at the RAC asked me what did I mean by checking if its cloned. Both checks circa £400

Personally I would not worry about reg number, you can drive round any town or down any motorway and get hundreds of reg numbers to clone if you were that way inclined. There are a lot of members from Hampshire area who may know the car or even have owned the car so may well be able to put your min at rest. I had an S spec before the D4 but it did not have the sat nav.
Hope all goes ok and you enjoy your new toy MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

The best way to ID it is log it on to diag tools and make a network intergrity test which will show all the vins in the modules on the car, of which most are one time program only so cant be changed.
If it were suspect the modules would have wrong vins inside.

Connecting to diagnostic tools running the test, it will take about 30 minsfrom start to finish, its a simple process really.

Hi freelaner,
From the reg. number this is what the car SHOULD be: Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 S, Manual, Green.
First registered in Wimbledon, London on the 31-5-2005. Taxed until the end of November 2010.
I had exactly the same concerns when buying mine. It's worth doing an HPI check, one feature is mileage verification, whenever the vehicle has been into the dealers or an MOT station the mileage is taken and goes onto a database, so any discrepancy in then flagged up.
Hope this helps and good luck
G.M.

follow the guide on the hpi check.
You need to ID the seller with drivers licence or utility. There is no risk if it passes HPI as they will insure you against it subsequently failing one of the checks.
When you have look check the vin plate, they would have to be very very good to forge it and i cant see a crook bothering on an old disco.

done a HPI check and a DVLA MOT records check and everything has come up ok. The details on the MOT records check match with the old MOT certificates that are with the vehicle.
Grease Monkey where did you get that info from?
Obviously there is the VIN plate in the windscreen, is the VIN anywhere else?

Just go to any online insurer and type in the reg number when you search for a price is one way. Mark.
