No power until 2500 rpm, crawls away from standing, nearly got sideswiped by a lorry as it caught me out trying to accelerate (not) onto a roundabout tonight.
No warning lights, no smoke, no odd sounds
Have emailed TFC, but any other thoughts other than the above ??
TIA

Would suspect one of these, turbo failure (for me) had ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT error message, lots of black smoke after 2000rpm (ish).

I've checked the hoses as much as you can by torchlight, no sign of any splits (or bananas !!)
Am I right in thinking that if it were EGR's then on a 55 plate there wouldn't be any warning lights ??

thats right, it wasnt until 07 (i think) that egr faults resulted in warning lights coming on.
It certainly sounds like the same symptoms I saw when my EGR's were failing. I got both replaced under warrenty, but then blanked both off so it wouldnt happen again.

My 54 car had exactly same symptoms last summer (at 78k). Got so bad within couple of weeks that even with throttle to the floor it barely crawled at walking pace.
Blanking the EGRs not only fixed it but I am certain its faster, smoother and quieter now. And it wont be breathing in exhaust soot anymore so the oil should go black less quickly.
And blanking is much cheaper than replacing the wretched things.

Although Simon will probably complain that it is the default answer, it definitely sounds like the EGR valves... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

well with me never too keen to part with cash, I always start by looking to the easiest/cheapest solution, so on this one, I'd blank them off, without bothering to replace them. For a couple of quid and an hours work, it wont hurt to do this anyway, and you may well find its fixed it.

EGR Valves
Hi there,
we have a 2005 Discovery 3 and it has the same symptoms, no power up to 2000 revs. It has been on 2 diagnostic machines and nothing came up - now I know why if it is before 2007?
We have had very deep snow and lots of spinning wheels and short journeys on low gearing for weeks so I wou
ldn't been surpised if the valves have just got dirty.
Could I ask do you have to take out both EGR valves to clean them or can it be done insitu? How do you actually blank them off - block the pipes at the valve? We don't wnat to replace 2 x £150 valves for the sake of it as there seems no way to tell which one is faulty. However it sounds sound like they need a clean and blocking off - just need to know the best way if anyone can shed any light?
Thanks

even on a 2005 a faulty EGR will be logged by the cars ECU, it just wont put any warning lights up on the dash, so if you've got a faulty EGR, the dealer should be able to see it.
You dont take the EGR's out, just blank the pipes of at the valve end, and fix the air intake butterfly wide open.

Thanks for the info will try that.
Let's hope we don't get too much more snow, have had enough by now!!
Lee.
p.s. Extraordinary - just got it back from the garage, they blanked off the EGR valves as suggested. Thank god we didn't have to replace them and it worked! Amazing, thanks again! leeble

Having my second EGR valve replaced tomorrow (under warranty) at 29,000 miles, On both occasions the only symptom has been the engine management warning light, no loss of performance whatsoever, even when towing tintent.
Point is this, warranty is up in March, and I do not want to be forking out £300 for EGR valves at regular intervals in the future.
Will blanking valves prevent engine management warning light in future?
As I understand it, EGR is purely for emmisions control. Is there a MOT issue here?

No problem with MOTs. Mine sailed through with blanked valves. Others on here have reported same. Can't comment re warning lights though as my car is early 54 one.04 TDV6 SE Auto Vienna Green/Tundra Leather - LR side steps.
