Hi,
I have my disco since a few days, it's 140000km and '05, and i had brocken my EGR valves!

I decide to change them and make an EGR-less.

The valves are new (that seem to be better for electronic) but they're beside a piece of steel...

Since then, no smoke, high power Wink

And everything is OK for the ECU ...

Netherlands 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Stornoway GreyDiscovery 3

I have an manual 2005 disco 3 and am having engine system failure messages pop op after about 30 seconds after starting the engine, even when the engine is running idle!
the problem has been there for a few weeks and have it checked by several dealers,
Computer at dealer says it has a turbo problem at bank a.

The car has plenty of power however lately it cuts out above 3000 to 3500 rpm, i have to pop the clutch and let the rpm go dowm to idle, then I can continue driving as normal as long as i do not reach to high of an RPM with half throttle.

differnt dealer says it is the turbo module and the turbo needs to be replaced which will take 2working days in the shop plus 2000 euro for a reconditioned turbo!!!

The problem i am having is, could it be something else before I spend so much money on something that might not fix it? since the pulling power is still as good as it always has been.

I would love to hear some sugestions! Question

After loss of power I had a dealer tell me that it was the clutch being on its way out and sending a signal to the turbo to lower the power. Question
Clutch replaced at dealer, no change in power. Change in wallet, though...

Other dealer thought it was the turbo. Had turbo replaced. No change.

Next thing was closing off the EGR valves, which I thought would be a good idea anyway. This helped mid-range grunt a bit, but did not solve the initial problem.
Which is that the car will not go beyond 3000 rpm in 5th or 6th gear and will not go as fast as it should on the motorway.

Thinking about leaving it like this. For normal use it runs sufficient, but I just don't like to have a car which does 80% of what it should.

if MY 07 and later show a warning light when EGR's fail, can you blank them without the warning light staying on permanently?

Well both my EGR's had gone but then it was found that the signal to the waste gate on the turbo was faulty and it was opening too much, hence the reduced power and 'engine system fault' warnings.

Anyway, the car now drives perfectly.

On cost, so far 18 months out of warranty I have spent the same on repairs that two years of Land Rover's warranty would have cost. I'm just hoping that the next six months are gentle on me!

110CSW,
how did they found out about the signal to the wastegate?
My dealers can find anything.
Is there a fault code, or other clue how your dealer found this?
regards,
Thomas

Not sure I am afraid but they could not tell exactly what it was with the turbo until the EGRs had been replaced.

Not had the problem yet on my 54 plate, but sure it will happen one day! Out of interest are there any downsides to blanking off the EGR holes and not replacing, e.g. noise, fuel consumption, emissions, MOT?

BTW my wife has had 2 replacement EGRs on her 2.2D X-type. Both times the symptoms were that the engine died immediately after starting up (like, stall died) and according to AA fuel pressure at the common rail was double what it should have been, hence engine management shut it down.

I think my car may also be suffering with the EGR problem. (2006 auto with 48k)

Since mid afternoon today, there is no power under 2500rpm, after which it still takes off pretty quick.

There doesn't appear to be any more smoke than you would expect after a burst of quick acceleration in a diesel, so I'm hoping it's not the turbo. (Presumably, if it was the turbo, I wouldn't get near normal acceleration after 2500rpm?).

I've got the car booked in to the LR dealer in Ascot on Friday morning and I've got cover with Warranty Direct, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will be relatively pain free.

One quick question - is the blanking off of the EGR an 'unofficial' mod that is only done by independents, or would the dealer do it for me?

Having read all these posts, I like the comments regarding 'quieter, faster and smoother' once the EGR is blanked off, so I'm quite tempted.

Thanks.

PS - Now I'm out of LR warranty, can anyone recommend a good independent around the Bracknell/Ascot/Staines area?

110CSW - I am interested in your issue. My wifes car (05) has been into the garage, lots of black smoke, no power. They diagnosed the EGR (on was worse than the other) both were replaced (out of warranty Crying or Very sad ). When I went back to collect the car they said that the EGR fault had cleared but I needed a new turbo (£971 + VAT from LR plus day and a half to install) At the moment the smoke has gone the car drives better, but is low power at low revs.
Anyone got any ideas?

Car started doing some odd things today

No power until 2500 rpm, crawls away from standing, nearly got sideswiped by a lorry as it caught me out trying to accelerate (not) onto a roundabout tonight.

No warning lights, no smoke, no odd sounds

Just had same today, twice! Once with ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT, second time without. Got to the stealer ( Bow down Bow down Mark @ Frank Ogg, Elgin) both times, once after a restart second time in crawl home mode. Then wouldn't replicate fault. Hopefully we can sort out what the issue is before service in 3 weeks. Doing 1500 miles this coming weekend, this could be interesting! Big Cry Big Cry

PS could only get 40mph max on straight flat roads, up slightest slope couldn't do more than 10mph. Apologies to the peeps of Elgin. Embarassed
