Is it possible to data-log the info on the "4x4 Info&qu |
|
Just wondering - is it possible to somehow get a feed of data from the 4x4 info screen and record the various "telemetry" to a solid state recorder?

you'd need to either a) tap into the feeds that go into the 4x4 screen or b) take an output from the 4x4 screen module (if such a thing exists).
Someone with a decent wiring diagram may be able to give some clues - failing that have a nosey in the back of the unit a the wires....

I would say the answer is no.
The connections to the display are CAN bus and MOST. You would need to know what LR protocol is and be able to decode it. With the correct analyser it may be possible but....
What info is it you are trying to record?
Ian.

I was wondering if it was possible to get things like the diff lock status, front wheel direction, suspension articulation, and off road mode that are shown in the 4x4 info screen.
I wrote some software which I use for trackdays which converts telemetry into on screen graphics (like you see on Formula1) - was looking to adapt it for off-road footage but sounds like its not really going to be possible to capture the data.

mattdaniels, forget the screen, just cus that's where you see some of the info being used and displayed, does not make it the best place to try to get it from. In fact it's possibly the worst.
You can actually get this from the OBDII socket if you wish, or by tapping into the CAN bus anywhere you find it.
The problem is not really tapping into the CAN Bus data, but understanding and decoding it, and sadly although the CAN bus protocol is standardized, the two and a half thousand inter ECU comms messages that can be transmitted over it every second, have identifiers that are totally custom and unique to Ford, and this info is kept very top secret.

Hey mattsaniels, did you get anywhere with this? I'm interested in replacing my navigation/4x4 screen with a tablet running my own UI. I've struggled to find the pid definitions. Without them this is pretty much a none starter...

It should be possible to do mattdaniels.
You need to first gather all the info you would like to filter out. like terrain mode, steering and all that..
As BBS SPY says its a big secret by Ford.. But its not impossible to figure it all out..
Lets say you want to find the steering angle stuff.. wel.. you have the seering angle sensor. This has to transmit its data on the Can bus and it has its own PID. So you need to figure out what PID this module has.
You need a canbus interface.. you can make one your self.. or you can buy a kit for it that is allmost ready to use.
connect the Can high and Can Low to the interface and start logging the PID's.
You will see huge amount of data rolling over the screen and @the first glance it doesnt make any sense, until you figure out PID's and what they are..
I would be intrested in such "project" too.

Ok, cool parrafin. I'll get the interface knocked out and touch back with the thread.

thanks! I'll check it out. I know there are a few great software diagnostic tools out there that can retrieve the data. Just wish one of application programmers would release an API for those of us that want to write and build our own interfaces.

yeah, Gap Diagnostic seems to have it figured out. The iidTool is pretty slick. Pricey, but slick.
