I've made a little progress:

I decided to follow Sparkfun's hookup guide to get my feet wet since i wasn't entirely sure what to expect (https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/can-bus-shield-hookup-guide). I'm using their Sparkfun Redboard and Can Bus Shield. It was surprising easy to begin seeing can bus messages.

My plan is:

    1. record can bus messages
    2. initiate the target behavior in the vehicle (i.e. press door lock)
    3. stop message recording.
    4. play back the messages one at a time until I find the message that caused the behavior.

I've hit a couple obstacles:

Land Rovers have more than one can bus. With my current hardware I can only monitor one at a time. I should be able to consult the service manual to see which controllers reside on each bus. Eventually I would like to monitor all. The solution for that might be multiple micro controllers or a custom shield. I almost purchased the seeed studios can bus shield since it would allow me to stack multiple shields on the redboard but it would have to ship from china and i was anxious to get started.

I have been able to record messages and play back but i'm not getting the desired result. for example, i tell the micro controller to start recording. The i push a button such as the door lock. Then i stop the recording and replay it. In theory the same behavior should occur, the doors should lock, however its not. I suspect i'm not properly composing the messages before replaying them and the ECUs are ignoring it. I've tried two different programming libraries and both produce a different result when i parse the message ID. I'm looking for a way to see the RAW message so i can determine which library is properly handling the message.

Anyone out there have an example can bus message? I'm specifically interested in the length of the message ID.
