Slight alternative proposal |
|
OK... all sorts of caveats here....
Firstly, I don't want to usurp Fly Boy's planning for some more Northants lanes and, possibly more important, I have no knowledge whatsoever of the following lanes and UCR's, ie whether they are scratchy and overgrown or completely OK for shiny D3's.
Also, it should be noted that I am a mere pretender... driving an ancient D1 (14 years and 210k miles old!) and lurking here until I become a 'proper' forum member when my D4 Commercial arrives
Currently, my definition of 'drivable' may vary to yours...
Any comments from anyone who knows the area better would be good and I may even drift over there for a quick look.
Start in Hanging Houghton - 754737 and head out on the minor road that turns into a UCR, turning right at 724744 NE onto byway to Maidwell
Straight over the A508 in Maidwell to pick up the UCR at 749772 heading N, before then turning left onto byway back towards the A508.
Turn right onto A508 and head N over the A14, turning left onto minor road in Kelmarsh at 736792
Left onto UCR at Grasslands Farm, heading S to take us UNDER the A14, continuing S towards Haselbech
Turn right at 710775 towards Naseby - into Naseby and then left in the village centre to pick up another UCR at 687779 to head up to the juunction of the A14 and the A5199.
I am not sure about the next bit... ideally, we would head along the A14 for 800m or so, then turn left onto a byway at 652778 heading S to Cold Ashby - Not sure whether the Highways Authority will allow entry/exit to a byway onto the A14 so this may be TRO'd now! Advice welcome. If this bit is shut, it would be easy to head south on the A5199 (step above) and into Cold Ashby on the minor road.
Leave Cold Ashby on the SW road and turn right onto byway at 648755, heading SW before turning right onto byway at 630745 to head NW to Elkington.
From Elkington, there's a bit of road work to loop back via Yelvertoft, Winwick Grange and to Winwick where we could pick up the UCR heading ESE past White House Farm
Left onto minor road and then right onto byway at 645736 to head NE to Thornby.
Right onto A5199 to head SE towards Northampton, turning left onto byway at 696730 towards Cottesbrooke
Suggest loop right at the end of the byway into Creaton where, depending on time, there appears to be a pub...
Memorymap details this as being 48Km... It's actually a loop that brings us back to within a few miles of the starting point at Hanging Houghton.
As for dates, we may need to move quickly as Northants CC will probably shut all the lanes at the end of October - who can do what?
I could do Saturday 2nd October and the Sundays 10th or 17th October...
Wot u fink?
As I said, any comments on the proposed route would be useful - I will also run this past someone who lives in Spratton for his comments over the weekend.

What sort of map does one require in order to make sense of that coded jargon you just typed?

The 2nd is good for us. Will look at the proposed route in more detail over the next couple of days.
Thanks

Paper?
Or follow Me/ FlyBoy / Bodsy etc????
All the numbers are good ol' grid references so the starting point of 754737 would mean grid line 75 and then 4/10ths of the box across by vertical grid line 73 and then 7/10th of the box going up... hope you aren't now totally confused... Sorry!
If you want, I may be able to scan part of the map next week and send by e-mail as an image - PM me your e-mail addy if so.
If anyone has Memorymap, I can send over the route as detailed above.

Hi all
Fly Boy... yep - trying to keep to the spirit of your original route... thanks for the idea - this option simply brings us round in a bit of a loop rather than ending up by DIRFT.
Discodk... MM overlay e-mailed.
If anyone else wants the MMO, just let me know!
Times... how about 2pm at Hanging Houghton on 2nd Oct?
Who's going then?

Be aware that the byeway heading South from Elkington, has deep holes at or about grid...627755, last time I was along there on foot, I was heading south and noticed very deep ruts along the left hand edge.

OK - If that one's undrivable, then we could turn left at 631745 and head into Winwick to avoid that lane and the road work that brings us back to Winwick anyway!
Thanks for the heads up FB!

It's drivable, or it was the last time I saw it, which was back in July....
Just care is needed in order to keep to the other side...
If necessary we will just back off..
Gardening equipment will be required as well. I can provide a petrol driven commercial hedge trimmer....
