Yes very easy to fit and remove. Luggage cover can stay in place. Not a permanent fix to the pillar but it might leave a mark as it rests against it. I paid about £92 inc delivery.

I got the load guard / dog guard for exactly this reason. I can load from floor to roof without worrying about stuff flying forwards.
A very good friend of mine was hit by a sigg bottle (like a can of coke but about 1.5 times bigger) it was on the back seat of his car. He had a crash and the bottle went into the back of his seat. It broke his back! Flying objects really shouldn't be underrated.
If you don't want to spend the cash on a guard, then I'd suggest a sheet of MDF cut to size, and ensure all the heavy stuff is loaded at the bottom, but you'll loose space with something like this. My best advise would be to get a 2nd hand one on flea bay, or on here.

We had 5 children wish we had a D3 back then, all grown up now.
So regarding a load guard, as we use all the back ie both rear sets of seats down, and the ones from LR don't fit behind drivers seat, looked in are local green paper, and found a dog gard with exdending legs so will fit into any car, it is a bit like stair bairer to stop kids coing up/down staiers. There's hardly any rear space behind row 3. Surely if you stick a dog guard in you're wasting more space than you gain, because the rear seats are on an angle so the dog guard must sit about half way between the base of the seats and the tail gate?
Also BTW someone on here is selling a load guard at the moment, £60 ISTR might be wrong, but take a look in the for sale section. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

I will be selling a half height dog guard soon as I am getting a Lintran 'dog box' to imprison the beasts in. I will post on here when its available if anyones interested. D4 2014
