VINs
is there any way to tell from (or via) the VIN the date the car was built, basically whether a car has been sitting around for months before registration or was it straight from the factory???

5A is 2005MY, 6A is 2006MY, there is an easier way.....
Check the labels on things like the headlights and suspension wishbones, they will give a component assembly date, most of the line stock is delivered 'just in time' so is unlikely to be sitting around for weeks.
the oldest date on mine was 20th of August 2005 and I collected on 13th September 2005, some of the dates were later by a few days

Tx, will have a look. Reason asked is both my wife's & my D3s were registered within a few days but the VINs are some 35000 apart. Either there are big gaps in the VIN numbers or one is much later than the other.

Crumbs, I thought mine was one of the early ones, according to TFC's method, all my components date from October 04, but according to the last 6 digits, its over 300000 down the line. I suppose the unique 6 digit number did not start at 0. it ends 0221, so maybe mine is number 221?
