for the first few months, I gradually learnt that the auto-sense wipers would operate as I was reaching for the control stalk to 'give them a nudge'  After that I habitually turn them up a notch at dawn or dusk, the rest of the time they stay on the base setting - they just seem to operate slightly before I would initiate a manual wipe, which for me is fine...
I guess the reason there is the manual or auto option is to give you the choice
