Emergancy brake coming on whilst driving

Coming back from Salford today, middle lane M62 , 70ish MPH Whistle , red and yellow brake light came on and then a sudden stop!!! I Sh Censored myself Shocked stuck in the middle of the M62 is not a good place to be!!! Evil or Very Mad

Was given a few hand signals and had a few choice names shouted at me from the cars behind,
switched off and re started all okay, drove a bit futher on it did it again only now I have the air bag light on aswell!

Over the Christmas holiday it was taken in for the Handbrake coming on by it's self when parked (no i hadn't put it on!)_ and was told the Loom had been repaired,
it has now been recovered to the stealers and Enterprise has delivered me a VW Tiguan???? Big Cry

Is this a common/ known fault?

The VOSA web page is on Al's first post in this thread. The more reports, the less likely it can be brushed off by LR with an "it's a service issue addressed by technical bulletins" explanation.

The outcome is noted in this thread.

I take it it didn't say 'emergency brake applied' or a similar message. You would think the software could / should only do that kind of thing if you were to select the emergency brake function. Sounds quite serious especially given all the press regarding toyota recently.

Possibly a failed epb switch? you haven't spilled a drink recently have you? Like previous comment, it would give a message in the LCD if the epb was applied whilst moving.

I was thinking the same as Gareth.....I've never heard of the emergency brake being activated by accident.

As well as the warning message on the dash, it should also cause a beep-beep-beep to go off...

By pure coincidence mine was also activated at around 110km/h on the motorway the other day whilst changing lanes - it was caused by one of the elastic waist-cords from my jacket getting hooked around the EPB switch....when I leaned over to the left to get something out of my right coat pocket, I must have pulled up on the cord and also the switch...

beep-beep-beep.....cruuuunnnch.....it jammed on but only for 1-2 seconds as I realised that something was up and as I sat straight again it released the switch....

Hi, Yes it did bing, but didn't look at the display, was more worried about the traffic coming up behind FAST! no loose cord or zips hanging down to catch the switch, mine won't release the brake unless you turn off the ignition!

When it went faulty at Christmas it came up with faulty brake switch, this has now been replaced by the dealers twice and LR assist, apparently it was down to a corroded loom on the EPB ecu under the car,
I have just filled inthe VOSA report and sent it off.

Good man Scratcher. When Chris from LR calls you*, be sure to stress that yours came on while you were driving with no manual intervention, just to ensure this is differentiated from the other cases they've had. Thumbs Up

(*It always seems to be poor Chris who gets these. Nice chap though Thumbs Up )
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Agreed, he is probably sick of the sight of VOSA EPB reports.

The update on my car,
Full chassis loom has been removed and has been taken away to be inspected by Land rover and the loom manufacturer!, just waiting now to have a full new chassis loom fitted, lucky for me my LR warranty does not run out until 13th March , I could be in a different position if out of warranty!

I'll be very interested in the result from your chassis loom inspection.

My EPB has now failed twice due to a broken wire in the chassis loom. I reported this in this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic43189.html?highlight=vosa and the final verdict from Land Rover was that the cable was compromised and that "the evidence obtained clearly indicates that external factors have caused the failure reported" Shocked

It would be nice to know what they thought these "external factors" were.

Seems to me that perhaps the chassis loom is inadequately protected or not supported enough - there have been other reports on here of owners finding bits of electrical cable chaffing on the chassis around the EPB module area.

I have been advised to have the chassis loom replaced but as my car is out of warranty, the cost of this would, Shocked Shocked have to be borne by me.

Spoke to dealer yesterday,

New chassis loom and EPB control unit fitted, can't release the car until LR have inspected , should have it back by Tuesday,

3 weeks from start to hopefully finish, can't complain at the service from dealer and LR,

Can't wait to get out of the Chavtastic RRS from Enterprise and back into permagrin mode Thumbs Up

UPDATE,

It has now been 1 month since car went into the dealers, still waiting to get my car back Big Cry

Now the Handbrake switch and EPB control unit has now been changed and sent back,
getting a bit fed up now, every weekend we have to take 2 cars as the Chavtastic RRS only has 5 seats and I need 6,
really missing the Disco3 Crying or Very sad

Spoke to Chris Orr, he still hasn't said what they have found or when they are going to go to the dealer to test and sign the car off so that it can be released back to me!

I supposed I shouldn't complain as they are going through the car thoroughly to resolve the problem.

Andy

Has this saga finished yet? If so, what was the final outcome?
