Flinty, has anyone put rainX or similar on the screen, as it will break down & deteriorate into a very smeary screen after a while if not maintained.
I put some sealant on the windscreen a while ago to see what it would do. Works a treat for a few weeks, but then starts to breakdown again. Would be fine If I kept topping it up, but ICBA so will be removing it this weekend by Claybar  Bodsys Brake Bible

Probably just build up of crud, get some autoglym glass polish, give it a good buffing (if it stops raining long enough, or you can find somewhere dry to park!) and that should sort out the smears, if its still bad new blades unfortunately.
The aftermarket blades seem to be popular on the forum, but I just got some OEM ones from TLO and they work fine.
I find the best prevention is not to let SWMBO drive in the rain as she has the wipers on too fast  Actually I find intermittent always goes to fast for my taste, I think this is what screws the blades as they are running on a dry screen when there is not enough water to glide over the screen.
Auto-glym fast glass spray is great for keeping the screen un-greasy as well between polishes (do outs every month or two).
If you have been using nasty soapy wash stuff, it has polish in it, and that will be causing the smearing, as NoDo$h points out in his own style

Yes, I was just warning my colleagues if it keeps up like this I am wearing my very practical but very stylish hat in the way to town to get lunch, the one that keeps my head and glasses dry but apparently makes me look like "indiana jones accountant" according to one colleagues kind words!
Still at least your not in the car valet product business like one of the other site sponsors!

Don't have the time to shop around so just getting standard ones via local garage & his motor factor.
When it comes back, the screen will get a good clean with Clay Bar & Lube [as Tom W suggets] though I've not used *vinegar for screen application].
I always give the screen a good clean now and again using this method.
Great in summer for removing fly residue.
*Vinegar is good on it's own for cleaning the wiper blades. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
