Warranty Options - made a decision.

My Land Rover Approved warranty is about to expire at the end of Sept. Renewing it didn't make any sense, given how little the policy covers once you're over 60K miles (I'm on 75K). I was very pleased with the old LR policy, claimed a couple of times and no issues.

Did my homework and decided to go with Warranty Direct based on a number of recommendations. My only gripe is having to pay up front for work done at a main dealer - Duckworths are excellent and I don't want to take it anywhere else. However, you "don't get owt for nowt", so I expect that inconvenience to be reflected in the price.

The guy I spoke to was excellent and was able to tailor the policy to my exact requirements I also got a good reduction on the online quote. Whichever company you go with, I'd recommend ringing just to see what discounts there are and to tailor things exactly. I had a number of concerns that could be addressed by changing the policy slightly.

Anyway, so far, so good, and the guy certainly spent a considerable amount of time over a number of days/phone calls to sort it all. I hope the aftersales care is just as good!

Basically, I'm on 75K miles.

Key points are:

- It's their New Extra Care policy - which covers a lot of stuff
- 13 months
- £0 excess
- 10 interest free instalments
- Wear and tear covered from day 1 (as I've had a service in the last 30 days) rather than after 90 days
- No Betterment Option included (their standard option is to cover a reduced percentage of the repairs 90% above 60K, 80% above 70K etc etc) - so they cover 100% of the labour and parts costs
- Franchised Dealer rate.
- Additional emissions and airbag cover included

£545

All sounds very good, and they seem happy to take the time to tailor things exactly - excellent customer care so far!

Will keep you all posted!

John,

Did you have to do anything special to get the £545 rate ??

I went online and it started out at £880, then £700 on the phone, £650 further along the conversation, which they have now confirmed in writing.

I have compared it to what you managed to get and it is the same, only difference is that mine has 42k miles not 75 k miles ?

Bit suspicious how the rate keeps tumbling but if I can get it for £545, may be worth it...............

John,
Already got my LR cover for this year but will be interested to see how you get on with the insurers if you do have to claim. I expect Duckworth's will be as good as ever. Thumbs Up

Rik - I think, because of your mileage, you'll actually be getting the top level of cover (which looks excellent) hence the difference in price. I just went back and forwards a lot of times and made sure I went through all the detail with them.

Will keep you posted!

England

I used WD a few years back on my old Voyager and I must admit they were excellent. Yes you have to pay the costs up front and fill in all the paperwork but they were very quick at sorting things out and settling up.

What really impressed me was the wear and tear cover on the package I had. Once my car went in for all the shocks to be replaced and on another occassion all the brakes including discs and pads were replaced.

I would happily use them again if I needed.

Good luck with it John
I used to have a WD warrnty
But my experiences were always bad when it came to claims.
Possibly because the D3 is such a complex machine.
There are many features on the D3 that are not on many 'standard' vehicles.
So basically if it isn't in the 'whats covered' section it doesn't cover it.

I moved to the AA since then.
And so far so good, I've already had repairs to the value in excess of the 2 yr policy cost.

But, warranties - they're all a lottery!

Thanks Ron - let's hope so! Agree - a complete lottery... Big Cry One thing I've done, which I'm hoping will come in useful in the event of a claim is for them to include a covering letter explicitly covering the areas I had concerns about their cover so that I've got something above and beyond the warranty booklet in the result of a claim.

The AA one sounds interesting - do you have a link to that please?

Following in John's footsteps I filled in the on-line form for a quote - cost £880 - ticked the box for a written quote and waited for "the call"

They started by throwing in the air bag & emissions option and reduced the price to £650.

He also asked where I had heard about them, to which I replied it was a recommendation but that my contact had paid less and got more, and I asked for the same as John.

He went away for a few minutes, agreed to it, took my credit card number but asked me to email the name of my contact and postcode or policy number and a few details of the car i.e. mileage (56,000) date of MOT (within last week) date of last service (within two weeks). The car is just over 4 years old.

So it looks like a group deal might be a possibility here.

John - PM coming your way. I'm happy to be a reference for anyone else trying to match this. - Ian

John, that's the policy link I got below.
BUT, it doesn't cover the Turbo - but I don't need that
Already had that done and got an LR warranty on the part.
They do various levels of cover to suit your requirements.
I think it's all to do with the insurance underwriter.

So far I've had a wheel bearing done - LR Extended Warranty doesn't even cover that.
Neither did WD on a previous claim
Also got seized rear brake caliper done under AA warranty.

Oh and I've got a high mileage D3 - 132k now and it covers vehicles up to [i think it's] 170k
But at 169k I can take out a new two year warranty which it'll then cover, irrelevant of extra miles.
Not saying it's the best, but so far it's worked for me.
I take the attitude that I've no finance on the D3 so no monthly payments.
I put a pot of money aside for repairs.
If the Warranty covers it - great, if not, too bad.

Get it while they're hot! Didn't disco3.co.uk kill the Tesco warranty with the numbers that took it up? Laughing Thumbs Up

Thanks Ron - that's really helpful. It looks like AA are the best option for post 100K milers Thumbs Up Really useful for comparing to when mine gets to that mileage. Thanks Thumbs Up

Ian - PM sent.

Certainly their pre-sales and helping me out was excellent - so I really hope that's replicated when/if it comes to a claim. They do come highly recommended by Honest John, which was what attracted me.

Hopefully if we can build up a mass of D3 users, they'll treat us especially nicely Thumbs Up
