BP Ultimate has wrecked my D3 - HELP!!!
I may be exaggerating - or WRONG - but after fuelling with BP Ultimate, my D3 has shown "ENGINE SYSTEM FAILURE", "REDUCED POWER" and "SPECIAL PROGRAMS OFF" so it MUST be their fault. This is 2 months after warranty and LRA expired (I bought more warranty but not the LRA extension ) Oh! LRA, wherefore art thou???
This happened 3 miles after putting 58 litres into a 1/4 full tank, from the BP Ultimate (YES I triple checked I was using the right right nozzle AND the display said "this is costing you 108.9p per litre" so it WASN'T unleaded petrol, AND I played with the little leaflet attached to the nozzle with a cable tie telling me how good the Ultimate fuel was ) pump at Alnwich Service Station, Willowtree Industrial Estate, Alnwick.
I have rung TFC ( mentor) who is sure it is a fuel (FUEL!! not FOOL!) problem, SO it MUST be THEIR problem. I have rung the Service Station to suggest they block the pump and I will be in in the morning. (Hope they don't claen the tank overnight... )
The AA will be here at 7.30am (here is a caravan site near Alnwick) to help with the diagnosis.
Anyone got any helpful suggestions? Anyone can check for frantic cleaning activity at the (Co-op) BP station at Alnwick? Anyone had any problems with BP ultimate (not v likely!!) Anyone got any calming words or helpful suggestions??

PS The fault went away after turning off the ignition and restarting but the engine sounded as rough as old boots and has no pulling power at low revs. Flooring the throttle brings the fault back instantly, as does going up hill.
Had to drive another 5 miles to reach civilisation/communications

Keep receipt and a sample of what is on the tank, if it was petrol you'll want to have some analysed.
That's exactly the faults I got caused by a blocked fuel filter. When was the filter last changed? Maybe it's been clogging slowly for some time, and reached the limit today? If it was caused by sediment in the fuel within 3 miles, it would have to be very cloudy fuel I would think!Previously:

DSL! Receipt pickled in Aspic; first instruction to AA man will be to get samples of tank content.
ridgeback_moor - fuel filter SHOULDN'T be a problem at 31,000 miles of UK motoring (OK 4,000 in France...) unless there is cr@p / water in the Ultimate. I don't tend to buy from cheap sites / supermarkets, having seen comment on this forum...

I've also had a very similar problem albeit in my D1 so no message display. Symptoms were exactly the same. Here's some photos of what came out of my filter

When the contents had settled you could see a small proportion of diesel at the top

I had filled up at Tesco from a 1/4 full tank the night before the problem arose and the filter had been changed within the previous 1000 miles so not a build up of crap over a long period of time.Clubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. Thanks for replies, guys.
philhunt - we are definitely taking samples tomorrow!!
Character - the 3 milles bit is spooky - any suggestions that the fuelling and EGR failure were connected? Can't imagine it...
All - after discussing with my (ex LandRover Insurance Dept) brother the following cogitations occurred....
1. 3 miles is too far to have been able to go IF the re-fuel HAD been a petrol misfuel (and it wasn't on MY account, and unlikely that their tank was 100% petrol )
2. 3miles is likely for water contamination to have damped, swollen and obstructed the paper-based first filter, with the low-pressure pump just able to get SOME fuel through.
3. One other of the pumps at the station was coned off, suggesting possibly low supplt levels - which are likely to generate swirl and contamination in the output to the vehicle...
Hopefully I have a puddle in me tank and a soggy fuel filter. . . .
I'm away to me bed, now, ready for the AA man at 7.30 am...
All contributions / advice gratefully accepted; replies in the morining
Thanks all
Andy
PS - point 4 - this area had severe flooding last week, AND I bet Ultimate diesel usage is not very high (at THOSE prices) so no wonder there's water in it AND no-one else has complained...2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

AndrewW, I hope everything progresses well today. Keep us posted!
I think your last comment about Ultimate being consumed rarely, is a good enough reason for me to avoid it.
Did you find out how often you have to change your filter?

Fuel filter should be changed every 2 years/30k...
Thats what my money is on though. A blocked filter can cause all sorts of weird and wonderful faults...
EDIT: If the AA man comes back with the fault code P2290, Injector control pressure too low, that code is more often than not caused by a blocked filter...My D3 Build Thread

I used to use Ultimate all the time in my D3, got better MPG and seemed to run better to me, so it's not the fault of Ultimate or the use of it that's caused your problems. If the fuel is contaminated then thats a seperate issue, could just as easily been any fuel. The garage should be able to tell you how much Ultimate they sold that day. I would wait and see whats wrong first, then if it is water in the fuel from the garage you'll be right to chase them for compensation.
Good Luck and I hope it's sorted soon Club Pie n Pea

Just had mine int he dealers for exactly the same issue - transmission fault, vehicle lowers etc etc.
It was a fuel filter same as Ridgeback - replaced and everything is now fine!56 Tonga Green HSE.

Disco mikey, I think you commented on my problem in which I got message saying engine fault and the code was P2290 and the fuel filter had been changed 1 month before it happened by TFC, I took the landy to the dealers and they changed the filter again, and it still happens every now and then. The fuel pump has been replaced along with some wiring, and it still happens every now and again.
I use BP ultimate fuel about 90% of the time, and its got me wondering if it could be a FUEL problem. I am going to use normal diesel and see if it still happens.
This may sound daft but, could a car not like a certain fuel, ie, like normal diesel over ultimate diesel?

Any update on this problem AndrewW. Did you get to the bottom of it, was it contaminated fuel.
