Andrew your not alone:
After reading various threads I thought I would try a few things to improve the MPG I was getting on my Disco.
On Saturday the car had a quarter of a tank of diesel so I thought I would give Shell V-Power a go for the first time. I pulled up to the pump and there were 3 choices available Diesel, V-Power and Unleaded. Popped in the V-Power, up to a full tank and drove a mile to my friends house. After the visit, got in the car and it wouldn’t start, rang Land Rover Assist. Within 20 mins the AA came out and said I had probably filled up with Petrol instead of Diesel. I thought I could never be a silly as that, so we went to the petrol station and low and behold I had filled up with V-Power Unleaded. I was embarrassed angry and annoyed with myself. Waited a few hours and then the AA Fuel removal man came and drained the tank and put some Diesel in. A an hour later and a few hundred pounds lighter the car was back to normal. It’s going to take some extremely careful driving to recoup that amount of money.
Thought I would also mention that included in the price was a can of ‘Wurth Diesel Additive’ which the AA have tested and recommend for Diesels. I have to say that the car did seem more responsive after this was added.

mmmmmm...
What would any of the experts around this forum say is a "safe" limit to carry on driving if one accidently put unleaded in a D3 diesel (assuming you then maxed the tank with diesel ?) without having to drain it off / clean up. ? (recognising of course ideally you would never put petrol in).
1 litres, 2 ?

Feagle (and Discovery3Newbie) - from reading many miss-fueling posts on here, I'll think you will find the answer to a "safe" limit is as good as zero.
As soon as you put the key in the ignition, the car comes to life which includes priming the fuel pump/injectors.
I'm no engineering expert and there have been some that have got away with just flushing the fuel tank. But from my understanding, petrol has some corrosvie/abrasive properties that destroys a lot of the engine. Once the car is "primed" fuel is flowing.
Discovery3Newbie - driving the car on three quarters of a tank of fuel means the diesel is very diluted. I really hope I am wrong, but if I was you I would get your D3 checked ASAP. Especially as it reached the pipes, injectors etc for the engine to stop. A new engine is 6k If you don't get it checked there could be untold other damage.
Fingers crossed for you... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Quote:Thats a cool item - presume fits all ok inside the D3 filler flap?
Yes fits neatly inside, and is completely hassle free, I thought I would have got used to it going off, but everytime it goes off it makes me double check and makes me concious of what I'm doing. For a few quid I'm quite impressed. £30 for the filter though is probably an even better buy as it actually stops you from misfueling. When I got my warning alert, I think the filters were about £50 so I took the cheap option. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Esso are usually pretty good at providing dedicated Diesel Pumps....or there is always the stick to the HGV pump option.
Seriously though this is one reason we run two diesel cars........diesel is the word you look for.
However now petrol/diesel prices seem to have levelled can't use that as a check anymore. However most pumps do tell you which fuel they are dispensing on the screen below the ltres/£'s. end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Simon, I agree, run all cars with the same fuel! My Jaguar is Diesel as well. How's the wife BTW is she still on crutches? D3 HSE MY05 Auto

I used to drive trucks for a living and a lot of trips were to Russia and as far south as the chinese border. with the temperature dropping to below minus thirty we used to run on a petrol and diesel mix. In the trucks manual it said it was safe to run with up to 40% petrol derv mix. I know the injection system was different but I am surprised it causes so many problems.

And with Disco3newbie ringing LRA about the misfuel will almost definately have implications on warranty work now. That error would be logged and can only mean alot of arguing when you need them

Chalk and cheese. The pressures in a modern car fuel rail are massively greater than in a commercial diesel lump. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

So, in practical terms, what could petrol filling up result in? Did I get that right, engine replacement (JF Lux)?

The petrol has no lubrication properties and can cause the high and low pressure pumps and the injectors to wear very quickly. Cannot the rest of the engine being effected unless the pump fails and foces something nasty through the injectors.
I could be wrong though. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

New set of injectors, fuel pipes, filter, fuel rails, pump in tank and the HP pump, + labour + full tank of diesel...
Not much change from £4k, maybe more...
Basic engine will be fine though My D3 Build Thread

Well, we have done 200miles towing tintent since the problem. Power seemed down when towing... uh-uh , but then I had filled up at local (expensive) village station (Yes, with diesel!!).
Topped up at half-empty, as advised on the A1(M) at guess what??? A BP franchise!!
VERY VERY VERY carefully octuple checked the Ultimate DIESEL nozzle and topped up. performance was better.
Now free of the tintent and all seems well SO FAR. All the nuances of noise that I have been so sensitive to (the D3 is my first diesel vehicle, and that diesel clatter STILL makes me think "piston slap" or "little end gone" ) are identical. Having driven gently or been towing for 300 miles, to put my foot down last night was frankly awesome (in ft/sec² terms...) and quiet.
So I am hopeful.
(Disco3Newbie - yours and my experiences seem to have been identical - was the AA fuel man called Trevor? Nice guy, knew his job / the vehicle, but some of his basic diesel knowledge clashed with D3 lore and what I (think I) know...)
A 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods
