Sorry to be so late in updating - there is a very poor Vodafone signal here and twice my (long) reply posts have been rejected and lost to the ether. SO... third time lucky
It looks like I was exaggerating and wrong (see my first post).
It was my fault (mainly).
If I hadn't been too ed off that night I would have done what my brother suggested (and the AA man did when he came) and sniffed the fuel filler. Pure Essence of Unleaded
So, after we had arranged a misfuelling clean-up man for 11am today, off we set to the BP station, where it turned out the pump WAS BP Ultimate Unleaded. (The Maestro card receipt unusually carried NO details of the fuel purchased...) BUT I think there is a problem here. There are four double-sided pump pillars each with three nozzles. Sides 1 -4 have nozzles "unleaded", "diesel" and "Ultimate diesel". Sides 5 to 8 have nozles "unleaded", "diesel" and "Ultimate unleaded". The difference is subtle and the delivery pipe on the Ultimate unleaded is black. There IS a word "unleaded" on the handle in tiny type, and a huge distracting dangly label telling you of the wonders of Ultimate fuel - not "diesel" or "petrol" according to what you are using... Confusion marketing at its best
Anyway the nice man came and charged me £200 to run away with £80 of fuel but it started after a few puffs of ethanol and is running like a train.. Hope all will be well. Same nice man said that he has seen a lot like this and no problem...
Many thanks to all for advice, help, support and interest, especially MikeP who offered to drive up if he could be any help.
I will keep all posted on progress and will have a few words with BP about their product identification. Mr Nice Man says BP are the worst offenders, followed by Total Excellium (for pump i.d. confuaion).
I feel a Fuel Angel coming on...
Thanks all

BP - you listening?I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Just a few thoughts and constructive comments from sympathetic friends and neighbours....
1. Why are diesel and petrol supply points mixed together?
2. Why aren't vehicle fuel filler apertures ALL nozzle-specific? (Is it the Mondeo that comes with nozzle-specific fillers?)
3. Why is there not a petrol (vs diesel) sensor in the tank, to either warn you, or just shut down the system?
4. If 10p worth of audio chip can sing "Happy Birthday" when you open your card, why not one which shouts "DIESEL, you @#%^&!!!!" when you open the filler flap.
As someone who double and triple checks since an attended service station gave me 26 litres of unleaded (tank drained and washed before ignition key turned), I still managed to do this.
I still blame BP camouflage/confusion, but a few things could help...

Sorry to hear about your trouble with the fuel mix up, it is so easy to make that mistake. I fitted the device mentioned in the thread below to save SWMBO killing me if I ever did it!!
Hope your car is ok, some people are making a lot of money out of this misfuelling issue...... Now driving BMW 330d Touring....misses D3...but not when at traffic lights

I think BP were paying out on misfueling claims due to their poor and confusing labeling. LR suggest that the whole system is cleaned (and pump replaced?) after re-fueling.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Mine does!
When we got our D3 I was worried that my wife (who had only driven petrol cars) would misfuel it, I found a device for about £2 in Halfords and whenever you open the fuel cap it bongs at you and says "Diesel, Remember Diesel". It has a little light sensor in it and so detects when the cap is open. It works really well.
I believe the new D4 comes with a device that stops misfueling. I know you can get these as well but I think they are about £50D3 HSE MY05 Auto
