Towing with D3 manual !!
I don't know if other people have noticed this but when towing the caravan its a to set off from a standing start on a hill. The revs just drop off, you have to slip the clutch, once your moving then everything is fine and she pulls like a train. I have talked to another D3 owner who said the same. I'd hate to tow something really heavy !!

LR recommends that, in theses situations, you start off in low-range.

As with any other diesel-engined vehicle, you'll need to keep the revs up a bit as you move off to keep the turbo going. Unfortunately this means that you have to slip the clutch for a few seconds.
This is also true for petrol vehicles, unless it has a truly massive engine!Regards,

What is the change from Low to High like when on the move? is it faultless and smooth or does it sound like the box is about to fall off like it does on my 300TDi?

I have to pull a compressor weighting in at 3.5 ton with my manual disco, and like that pulling away is a nightmare, you just know its having the clutch for breakfast! First gear is just way to high. Starting in low range is not always an option particularly when pulling onto a busy roundabout/junction.

I have started on a hill, in mud and with Low range and its good...
Also on tarmac, low range towing more than LR recommended is good....once you get above 10mph....drop into neutral and then high range and back ito gear....all while the car is rolling.

hill starts
HI my o5 was like that,would not pull away on a hill without flooring it and slipping the clutch. My 07 pulls away no problem. MAte of mine told his dealer about it [Lakeland] He said early ones were like that ???TDV6 Se Zermat. 07

if onluy people read the instructions.....
i pull heavy loads with a manual ALL the time, it's no bother at all, even on busy roads,
if on a hill i use low 1st and so on, on flat roads i use 2nd or 3rd in low and once above 10-15mph hit neutral and go for high,
it's no problem at all and there is no need to stress the clutch at all,
as said at the top, it IS all in the manual.....

thats what I was told to do years ago even using my D1 and D2...both of which were manualD4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

so....when you change into high ratio, do you go back into 2nd or 1st? I find if going uphill the speed drops off rapidly when in neutral!Richard

depending on the road but normally second in high, a little practice on a quiet stretch to get the neutral/ low-hi/ 2nd, it takes no longer than a double de-clutch on an old car..one wife.......livid

If I start from rest in Low Range, get up to brisk walking pace, probably in second, knock into neutral, flick into high range , then back into second, tkes a couple of seconds longer than a normal change, and no mechanical hassle
