Like these:
19" Good Year MTR

Or Pirelli Scorpion ATRs, etc....

They are currently available.

There has been alot talk on this user forum that Dunlop MTR will be dicontinued. It would be good to confirm this.

A mud terrian tyre is not a good tyre to live with on a daily basis if your D3 is the family taxi and escape vehicle. But if there is no other choice then be it. At least it is an LT construction.

I just checked the Australian Pirrelli website, the Pirelli ATR (passenger construction but strenghted) is a 255/55 18. Thats the old D2 size.

So we have to agree that 19inch tyre choice is at best minimal.

On brake & wheel sizes.... I have a V8 D3 with the bigger brakes. 18" wheels do fit and I have Cooper HT+ on them. On the original 19" wheels, I have Goodyear MTRs, a tyre not to be sneezed at (but given the current price, the sneeze can be replaced by panic attacks). ON a recent D3 offroad course day, my 21 yr old daughter was able to make it up a rather large dune with the MTRs that those with 17" AT tyres had trouble with. All's not lost with the bigger brakes and wheels, just a lot more expensive. The brakes are a beauty to behold. Once properly bedded in, I did a practice stop from 90km/hr and my glasses flew off (new ailment = front impact whiplash). The brakes have also proved to be pretty long lasting (60% remaining after 50k).

I just put a set of 19" Pirelli ATR on mine (size: 255/55R19), seems like they are the only AT tyres available other than Goodyear MTR. Even though they are listed on Pirelli's website, they are very hard to get - no one seems to carry any stock in WA!! At the end of the day, the tyre shop contacted Pirelli Australia and they managed to source 4 tyres from Sydney.

Thanks for the heads up sy328. Whenever tyres are mentioned someone allways gets the sizing wrong (this time me). Yes, sorry there is a scorpion ATR in 19 ". Though it is not LT (light Truck) which is in its self not a bad thing as its gives a choice from the MTR

The issue with the brakes on the D4 is that they will be bigger than what is fitted to the D3 V8. The D3/4 forum people are a resourcefull bunch. I read somewhere that a chap with a FFRR supercharged was able to champer the anti squeal blocks on his Brembos to fit a smaller wheel but he was starting with 20" going to I think a 19".
Someone will find a way.

And yes, the scorpinon ATR and maybe for short time only the MTR are it for now. The choice may increase with time. (We have had to wait about 3 years for the LT construct. AT2)

Wisdom to this time has been that you need the sidewall ratio to be on the higher side than where tyres on these lux 4wds are heading to allow for proper flex to conform to the terrain and resist puncture and ease the work the suspension has to do.

It might now be that tyre makers have moved on and can provide the performance of 70+ ratio tyres with the newer 55 series tyres the car makers now put on the showroom floor. If that is so it would be good to find some data somewhere to confirm it. Lower profile tyres provide great handling benfits to mostly onroad use. Its just the D3/4 RRS and FFRR provide performance ability beyond what tyre makers can cope with in one tyre.
I just want to be able to select a tyre from a group of tyres that cover the use range, just like I can with my dirt bikes.

I dream on.

Goodyear MTRs started disappearing off of various country websites about 2 months ago. I checked with my dealer and he said that they'd stopped making them, so I went out and bought my 5th for a spare before other hoarders to to them Mr. Green My ill-founded suspiciton is that in about Sept/Oct, at the start of the GFC, they made the decision to stop making a lot of tyres for "luxury" 4WDs. They will probably re-start production when the demand has built up, and buyers are willing to pay what I had to for my spare ($630). ((Pretty safe "can't lose" business model)) If true, this means that buyers of D4's may hasten the day when MTRs return to production. Then again, my other car (a Rover) and household appliances (Speed Queen) all went bust and liquidated shortly after my purchase, so even I don't trust my predictions. Whistle

The 19" MTRs are not LT but passenger. They are also the only MTR not made in the US (Germany) so the fact that the US has stopped making the original MTRs doesn't necessarily mean that the 19" MTR wont be available. The US GY website listed the 19" MTR as MTR-P whereas all the others (LT) were just MTR.

AFAIK it has yet to be confirmed, but it has been reported that 18" rims should fit over the 3.0 D4's bigger brakes and I'm very much hoping they do. The 2.7 still has the D3 brakes so 17" will fit those vehicles but I want the 3.0 engine.

The lack of 18" LT tyres that will fit the D4 is of concern to me. I will try Pirelli ATR in the standard size of 255/60-18 (XL, not LT) but there's a few LTs in LT265/65-18 / LT275/65-18 that can be made to fit without rubbing.

Edit: 255/60-18 AT2s are not LT. I have yet to find an LT tyre with a nominal sidewall height less than about 166 mm, regardless of rim diameter. 255/60 equates to 153 mm and 255/55 equates to 140 mm so I don't expect to see an LT tyre for 18" or 19" rims for D3/4.

That'll throw a spanner in the works for more than just a few UK owners, unless its only GY Aus that's not importing them anymore.

Thanks stevo for bringing us back on topic. Do you have any insights into the spec of an SE? Will it still have leather, xenons, auto headlights, auto wipers etc?
The price rise I expected but I hope it doesn't come with a reduced spec sheet.
